SENECA, S.C. (WSPA) Boats ramps have just reopened in South Carolina, but law enforcement officials told 7 News theyre hunting for people violating social distancing guidelines.
Laurie McGuinness has been waiting for the day she can get back on the lake.
As soon as its a nice day we all want to be out on the water like everyone, said Seneca Resident, Laurie McGuinness.
Boat ramps are much busier than shes used to seeing.
The ramps are back open after South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster ordered them to briefly close to prevent the spread of COVID-19. But even though theyre back open, those social distancing rules are still in place.
No more than two individuals per boat with the exception that family members from the same household. You still cannot stop your boat at any beach, island, sand bar or riverbank. You cannot tie or raft your boats together while on the water, said Lance Cpl. Shawn Hanna with South Carolina DNR.
Officials with the DNR say they have teamed up with the Highway Patrol and SLED to watch the waves across the entire state and make sure people are obeying the rules.
Thats something the Cousins said theyre doing. Theres a handful of them, but Caleb Cousins said theyre minding their distance, not only from other boaters but also each other.
Its been really nice to just get out and enjoy the sun. Its fun to keep our distance but also enjoy each others company, said Greenville resident Caleb Cousins.
Statewide, there are 70 different teams from Highway Patrol, SLED and the DNR that are monitoring the water. 14 of those teams are here in the upstate.
People should declare their small business and other properties boat ramps.
All kidding aside, working stiff and taxpayer me is more than a tad let down by Dudley Do Nothing.
Of course you're right--blatant and serious offences excepted.
"You still cannot stop your boat at any beach, island, sand bar or riverbank."
Sand bar??? Deserted island? River bank? Deserted beach? Where's the common sense!
Common sense is on a prolonged hiatus.
This reopening is pretty lame. This shutdown has scared people to death. When you see people driving down the road alone in their car ... or boat with a mask on you know that they are either a liberal or stoopid,or both. But I guess that goes without saying.
I’m amazed at how many buy this con.
How utterly f'n absurd is that ? !
Police state, anyone ?
Beaching your boat on a sandbar or small island is a tradition on Lakes Keowee and Jocassee and I am sure elsewhere in the South. The purpose usually is to party with alcohol, which has no place on a lake for life safety.
Just as well I’m not a boater.
Never had any real desire for it.
I remember renting a pontoon boat on Lake Mojave in May of 97. We had a large party with my guys and their wives and kids in a bay that we had to ourselves. We drank. We had fun the kids loved riding the jetskies and wave runners. Campfires,Smores and beer. The weather was perfect. Low 90s, sunny, cool nights. Let’s party America!
Alcohol has no appeal for me. It's a hypnotic and a depressant. Who wants to be groggy and depressed? Not me!
And the commonest cause of sandbar beaching is getting stuck on a submerged one.
” This shutdown has scared people to death. When you see people driving down the road alone in their car ... or boat with a mask on you know that they are either a liberal or stoopid,or both.”
I’m seeing it every day. And gloves. The people have gone insane. You have to be insane to take health advice from politicians.
“Alcohol has no appeal for me. It’s a hypnotic and a depressant. Who wants to be groggy and depressed? Not me!”
Your purity is an inspiration to us all.
When President Nixon was reelected and he could take the gloves off with dealing with North Vietnam,B-52 pilots and their crews in Guam and the Philippines were unleashed. They were served steak eggs and beer for breakfast. Now I’m sure some didn’t partake in the consumption of beer but as far as I’m concerned it’s a breakfast for champions.
Millions wasted on hiring more rentacops to enforce the police states, and...to create revenue by fines.
Purity has nothing to do with it. I don’t like to be groggy and depressed.
