Its not only the statistical density of the population, but the way the older architecture forces people closer. Everything in NYC is more closed in and crowded than in almost any other U.S. city, from subways, to elevators, to hallways. I can go in a grocery store in my city and never come within eight feet of another shopper, in NYC you are forced to rub shoulders with strangers constantly, in stores, on the sidewalk, and just about everywhere.
There are many factors, but I will throw a guess.
We know the Wuhan flu severely compromises your immune system. Therefore, in addition to morbidity factors such as obesity, diabetes, or other preexisting conditions, if you are carrying the common cold virus, pneumonia, or influenza those boogers have a chance to flourish with a compromised immune system.
I have not seen much written about this, but people in NYC are in close contact with one another via public transit and just the usual crush of humanity. I suspect the average New Yorker carries more of these boogers than the rest of us because of this increased exposure/contact.
The Wuhan flu is grabbing the doctors attention and the headlines, but the other illnesses don’t go on vacation or step aside for it. If you carry pneumonia you will be in bad shape with Wuhan flu. Same for influenza A or influenza B. Even the common cold would be uncommon if you exhibit Wuhan flu symptoms! Same for gut bacterial infections.... we have heard anecdotal stories about patients having GI issues with this illness.
That does not mean it is a direct result of this new virus - it may just present because the immune system is overwhelmed and it can no longer fight off much of anything.
NY is special/different in many ways, and theres probably some major factors special to NY City which have combined to make it ground zero. Even within NY City one can find large clusters (Bronx and Queens in particular) - Subway/public transit - High density public housing - Overall high density of city - clusters of poverty combined with health-care ignorance and precautions - international travel center Theres ongoing studies which help prove all of these factors.
Yep. The entire NE should be quarantined starting at the Philadelphia/Delaware border going West along the I-76 to I-81 up to the he Canadian border.
Friday night Mark Levin radio show cited a soon to be released academic study that showed CV followed subway and bus routes.
Mass transit drivers have a much higher infection rate, and the number of buses and trains were reduced so travelers are crammed even tighter.
Right. I think viral load may be the best predictor of who winds up with a serious case.
With high population density and heavy reliance on mass transit, my supposition is the cases that present in NYC tend to have much higher viral loads than the rest if the country.
If so, it couod easily explains their high mortality rate.
Data as of April 19:
Houston - 1.53% death rate (71/4653)
Cook County/Chicago- 3.9% death rate (305/7701)
Seattle King County - 6.7% death rate (340/5063)
Los Angeles - 4.7 % death rate (576/12021)
Dallas - 2.6% death rate (60/2324)
NEW YORK STATE - 7.3% DEATH RATE (17,671/241,041)
Every death in NYC is now counted as Wuhan Virus related. The hospital, city and city get federal money for that death. Follow the money.
Because they don’t have the sense to come in from the germs.
In 2015 there were 153,623 That comes to 420.88 a day with heart disease and cancer as leading causes.
From 2020/04/11:
Factors associated with hospitalization and critical illness among 4,103 patients with COVID-19 disease in New York City
-see https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.08.20057794v1
Strongest hospitalization risks were:
1) Age > 75 years (OR 66.8, 95% CI, 44.7-102.6)
2) Age 65-74 (OR 10.9, 95% CI, 8.35-14.34)
3) BMI > 40 (OR 6.2, 95% CI, 4.2-9.3)
4) Heart failure (OR 4.3 95% CI, 1.9-11.2)
Typo of the Day Award!
Their mortality rate is also worse.
>>Social distancing means a different thing in NYC, 27,000 people per square mile,
Yep, almost impossible to socially distance properly in NYC.
I live in a very small town in the boons and own a big junk of land, went for a 2 mile walk yesterday just around the border of my property and never saw another sole; hasn’t always seemed like a smart move to live in the middle of nowhere on lots of land, but lately it does.
Because they’re counting “probable” COVID-19 deaths in with the “proven” COVID-19 deaths.
Other theory that I have read, and make some sense, is that it’s not just *an* exposure that can get you sick, but the number and length of the exposures - i.e. once you are swimming in a petri dish of the virus, crammed in with other people who are also sick (whether or not they have symptoms), the more frequent exposures makes you more likely to get sick, and the more exposure you get, the more likely that you will become even sicker - don’t know if that holds up to scientific scrutiny, but makes some sense to me.
Ok, so why are these demographic factors any different than people hospitalized in Dallas, Tx there the death rate is 1/3?
Those all explain infection rate being elevated compared to other places. It doesnt explain why the death rate is higher.
[[What is happening or not happening in New York to allow for this? ]]
Cumo has banned hte use of HCQ to everyone except the very sickest, in hospitals, on ventilators already- when the drug does little to no good- He is directly responsible for the high death rates in NY- period
Nest question?
he were right the first time- and the second time too-
