‘Too soon’: Trump disagrees with Georgia governor’s decision to reopen businesses

Donald Trump has rebuked a state governor and Republican ally over his decision to reopen bowling alleys, hair salons and other businesses on Friday “in violation” of the phased federal guidelines.

“I want him to do what he thinks is right, but I disagree with him on what he’s doing,” the US president said of Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia. “I think spas and beauty salons and tattoo parlours and barbershops in phase one ... is just too soon.”

Trump was speaking on Wednesday at a wide ranging coronavirus task force briefing in which he announced he had signed a “very powerful” order curbing immigration, contradicted experts on how long the virus will linger and compared the crowd size at his last 4 July celebration to Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech.

Georgia’s huge gamble is likely to be watched with closely by state governors across the nation. Trump released national guidelines last week for states to pursue a staggered reopening of their economies once they achieve 14 days of declining new infections – criterion that the Peach State has not met.

If Trump can TRULY keep the borders closed and the travel restrictions in place then let the Georgia governor do his job. Anyone that wants to enter the U.S. needs to be screened and quarantined for 14 days. End of story.

“Anyone that wants to enter the U.S. needs to be screened and quarantined for 14 days. End of story.”

Anyone entering the US should show that they have had the virus and recovered. No antibodies, no admittance.

Anyone entering the US should show that they have had the virus and recovered. No antibodies, no admittance.

And in general, anyone who shows antibodies, should be completely free of any restrictions. With this in place, people will be intentionally seeking to catch the bug — which is good.

Prez has stated his opinion, but will not intervene unless Georgia suddenly starts piling up cases and Kemp refuses to budge.

One problem with that approach is that it is based on the assumption that a recovery from COVID-19 will result in permanent immunity. That has simply not been determined yet.

In fact ... I really wouldn’t want to wish harm on anyone, but if you told me that there will definitely be a certain number of additional COVID-19 cases in the U.S. over the rest of this year, I’d really hope to see Fredo Cuomo come down with it another five or six times. :-P

Well Kemp stabbed Trump in the back when appointed the wrong person to the Senate.

The fact that 98% recover in good shape has been totally lost from public discourse. We need to shift to a mode of protecting the vulnerable.

We're not even trying.

I see this as a case of a state Governor exercising his constitutional right to govern his state as he see’s fit free of federal interference and the federal government should just butt out. It’s rightly a state issue since the feds didn’t declare federal martial law. IMHO.

Seems like everyone is so blindered they miss the real point - even though he may disagree with it, he ain’t gonna get in Kemp’s way...besides, if he praised Kemp and Georgia had a new bigger set of cases tied to any of those businesses, the feeding frenzy would put so much blood in the water that solid food wouldn’t be needed for a while.

I’ve been wondering about this myself.

Way I figger, SOMEBODY’S got to open up. So President Trump, with his most trusted advisors, decided that Georgia was a perfect middle of the road place, with some virus deaths and carriers, but close to perfect as the best to open first.

But Trump knows that ONE death after Georgia opens will have the media howling and screeching and threatening a hanging.

Georgia’s Governor agreed to go along with it as it’s what his citizens want.

I think President Trump really wants this as it is the beginning of the end of it all.

Soon after we shall learn what a big overkill this nonsense was.

Then we pass a law to make it illegal to EVER shut down our economy again.

“in violation” of the phased federal guidelines.

IIRC, these were suggestions and it was up to the State to determine best path forward. Now it is a violation of NO LAW only suggestions from Moldor on the Potomac.

Eff the federal shift hole. March on States, it is your rights they are trying to usurp.

It’s cool because it demonstrates you don’t necessarily have to agree; governor in Georgia can do what he wants. Another point, hair cutters and nail salons already knew how to sanitize before Wuhan virus, nothing has changed there.

This was NOT said by a Planned Parenthood supporter!
