If you pay attention to the news, you might assume that record numbers of people are dying. The opposite is true. Not only has overall mortality for the United States been going steadily downward since January, but mortality has been substantially lower this year than last year. These are weekly mortality statistics for the United States from the Centers for Disease Control:
Week Number of Deaths 2019 Number of Deaths 2020 1 58,291 59,087 2 58,351 59,151 3 58,194 57,616 4 57,837 57,000 5 58,128 56,426 6 58,492 56,962 7 57,917 55,981 8 57,858 55,494 9 57,920 54,834 10 58,490 54,157 11 57,872 52,198 12 57,087 51,602 13 56,672 52,285 14 56,595 49,292 15 55,477 47,574 TOTAL 865,181 819,659

Oh crap, all the Table formatting went to hell when I posted. Please go to link to see in format!
Sorry.
Roads are empty and illicit drug sources are scarce. Fewer elective surgeries being done, too.
The business death rate is climbing, though. How ‘bout we track that?
Trumps’ fault?

We are told that 37,308 people have died this year from COVID-19 through April 18, yet actually 45,522 fewer people have died this year than last year during the same period of time.
Thanks for the formatting!
I bought a car from the insurance auction this week. There are maybe 1/4 as many listed on auction as normal.
It is important information, but the CDC can easily slap away the political/medical debate.
The CDC will just say:
(1) The number of accidental deaths has declined because of the lock down.
(2) And, the normal rate of filing death certificates has slowed way down because thousands of local government employees have been furloughed.
Then, the MSM will continue to completely ignore the numbers and the story.
I was one of the first people to post on this issue at Free Republic - at least a month ago.
This issue has not gained any traction since then.
Would imagine it’s a combination of lower traffic death toll and reduced ordinary influenza deaths as people socially isolate and practice better hygiene.
If COVID-19 had been a complete hoax then we’d see a remarkably lower death toll. But at the cost of massive unemployment and business failures.
Btt
Yep. If you can keep people out of bars and out of cars, you can save many lives.
If you take out the homicides from the south side of Chicago, the death rates are even lower.
The second quibble is legit.
There may be a lag time in getting complete data given that it has to come from so many local government entities.
So year on year comparisons may have to wait.
But the media meme last weekend was all of the deaths that were in the obituary section of several newspapers.
Death by medical malpractice is a substantial figure
This happened in Europe, too, several weeks ago, and then a couple of days ago, the story came out about excess deaths in Europe.
Who to believe?
>>The CDC will just say:

Plenty of deaths occur from accidents in the home
3000 a day dead just from abortion
Death by medical malpractice is a substantial figure

Wow, now thats one that didnt occur to me. Lots of elective surgeries are not taking place.
