As coronavirus upends 2020, Trump may have a hard time keeping Pennsylvania red. Here's why. (media tips hand?)

As of Wednesday night, the state had the fifth-most confirmed cases of COVID-19 and the fifth-most deaths from the virus in the U.S.

The economic toll has been even more striking. Since March 14, about 1.3 million Pennsylvanians (or nearly 1 in 5 workers in the state) have lost their jobs — the second-highest number during that period in the country, behind only California.

...the political fallout for Trump in Pennsylvania is already significant — and is likely to remain stark unless the public health and economic situations improve dramatically before Nov. 3.

Mark Harris, a Pittsburgh-based GOP strategist...warned that “even if Trump navigates the public health waters with a best case outcome, we’re still looking at a major economic upheaval, certainly in Pennsylvania, that promises to be the defining discussion of the fall campaign.”

“He’ll be judged on what the economy looks like here in November,” Harris said.

A Public Policy Polling survey released April 1 showed that 49 percent of voters in the state said they disapproved of Trump’s handling of the pandemic. Forty-six percent said they approved of his handling. (By comparison, 62 percent of respondents said they approved of the job Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, was doing in responding to the crisis, compared to just 20 percent who said they disapproved.)

Field, the former PoliticsPA.com editor, noted that the likeliest path to a narrow victory in Pennsylvania will go through two counties: Lackawanna (where Scranton is) and Luzerne (where Wilkes-Barre is).

Both counties have undergone recent economic revitalizations that would be likely be destroyed by a bad recession — which, he and others argued, would hurt Trump more than it would hurt Biden.

“If you have a sharp recession, you’ll see Trump struggling in those areas,” he said.

So, the Democrat governor of Pennsylvania wrecks the economy with one of the most draconian shutdowns in the country (using the standard of "life-sustaining" rather than "essential" to shut down even more businesses). And the media then writes pieces like this claiming the bad economy in the state will hurt Trump. Not once does the article mention that the governor might have something to do with the economic situation in Pennsylvania. It's no coincidence that Michigan and Pennsylvania, the two biggest "unexpected win" swing states for Trump, are the ones with the strictest lockdowns. This is the media picking up the ball when it's passed from Democrat governors to pin their shutting down of the economy on Trump.

Biden is a brain cancer survivor.

How does he campaign?

He’s a walking coronavirus victim already.

As long as pdjt and the rest of us keep pointing out that it is the governor that had destroyed millions of jobs and it is the governor that’s shoving workers into the welfare roles —- pdjt is still very popular and will likely win by a substantial margin imho. Substantial.

wow...just wow. The main stream media is out to lunch. So..wonder if anyone is left in journalism that uses their brains, instead of doing emotional, touchy, feely stuff.

The Democrats wrecked the economy, so they should own it.

Why would the good people of Pennsylvania blame Trump for the coronavirus?

". . . that promises to be the defining discussion of the fall campaign.”

I have relatives in Western PA and all they and their many friends talk about is how Clinton, Biden, and Obama, were all for shipping US industry to China. There's a LOT of media footage of those three and their well known minions bragging about how great doing so and Globalization in general are.

If democrats want to focus on the economy while the US doesn't have enough PPE due to China not only not shipping or shipping only what's defective but sending Chinese to buy up all they could in December and early January, well, the more the democrat help dig their own grave the better.

Oh really?

Democrats are calling for a shutdown until summer of 2021.

Biden says “No” to ANY fracking and, along with Obama, presided over the slowest recession recovery in 50 years, while Trump jumpstarted the economy until this stupid virus came along and the governor instituted draconian measures to stop it. Who would most voters want to be in charge of PA’s future economy? Not even a contest, except that the Demedia will continue to tell their lies.

This Pennsylvanian wants a second term for President Trump. If anyone can help our economy recover, he can. Plus I want to see “The Wall” finished.

Tom Wolf is an effete weasel, far to the left of most Pennsylvanians and widely disliked. He’s in a very weak position to play this card.

I’m pretty sure the people of Pennsylvania are not a s brain damaged as Joe Biden.
By November he’ll be lucky to make sentences, wait, he can’t do that now, maybe he’ll be lucky to make words.

Unfortunately, Wolfe has enable mail in voting, along with a rollout of newer digitally transmitting voting machines.

Fraud will be off the scale.

Wolf also appointed that sick mental transgender freak Health Services Director.

The two of them are responsible for the draconian lockdown measures we have to endure in Pennsylvania.

Lackawanna (where Scranton is) and Luzerne (where Wilkes-Barre is) run together like one big city. If you were new to either you would not be able to tell when you left one into the other.

I agree.....Wolf’s was an indiot on the cornavirus right from day one so he jumped into failing Cuomo’s pocket as his leader
for Pa.

Wolf sees Pa consisting of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh the rest of the state just doesn’t matter.
