Saudi Arabia's King Salman has ordered an end to the death penalty for crimes committed by minors, according to a statement Sunday by a top official.
The decision comes on the heels of another ordering judges to end the practice of flogging, replacing it with jail time, fines or community service and bringing one of the kingdoms most controversial forms of public punishment to a close.
King Salman's son and heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is seen as the force behind the kingdoms loosening of restrictions and its pivot away from ultraconservative interpretations of Islamic law known as Wahhabism, which many in the country still closely adhere to.
The crown prince has sought to modernize the country, attract foreign investment and revamp Saudi Arabias reputation globally. He's also overseen a parallel crackdown on liberals, women's rights activists, writers, moderate clerics and reformers. The 2018 killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey by agents who worked for the crown prince drew sharp criticism internationally.
The latest royal decree by King Salman could spare the death penalty for at least six men from the countrys minority Shiite community who allegedly committed crimes while under the age of 18, including Ali al-Nimr, who had participated in anti-government protests. Such activity carries terrorism-related charges in the kingdom for disturbing order and disobeying the ruler.

How... enlightened of the king.
No kidding! They have a script and they are sticking to it.
Here is someone who is bringing real reform, doing everything the Left consider near and dear, or at least moving in that direction. Nobody before him even tried. But the media loathes him because they see him as an ‘ally’ of Trump.
The King is clearly not omniscient like "The Experts" we have in here in America.
I know ... let's ship him a boatload of our "experts" so that he will know what to think and how to act.
This is changing their culture. I thought all cultures were equal?
Is there still a death penalty for any non-Muslim whod dare enter their segregated cities of Mecca and Medina?
So the way I read the article headline a person will no longer get the death penalty for flogging. Flogging as in using a whip or flogging as in British slag for selling? Or both?
The Oxford comma is our friend.
I’m not necessarily pro-Saudi. I am pro-Israel.
But I will give small credit where it’s due. King Salman is doing his best to reform Saudi Arabia - culturally and economically. I think he totally gets it that his nation can’t be an ass-backwards one sitting on an ocean of oil.
The steps is taking are definitely baby ones. It’s incredibly hard to undo decades of Wahhabi idiocy. There’s still opposition to him among the royal family and the multitude of princes and other royal hangers-on.
I guess the populace still has to watch out for homosexuals raining down from tall buildings.
Next project: a cathedral in Mecca and an Israeli embassy in Jeddah and nude beaches on the Gulf.
Yeah Saudi, you done arrived.

Summary.
Prophet of Doom is the best-documented, most comprehensive, presentation of Islam’s five oldest and most reliable scriptural sources. Ishaq’s Biography of Muhammad, Tabari’s History of Islam, and Bukhari’s and Muslim’s Hadith, were used to reorder the Qur’an chronologically and to set its surahs into the context of Muhammad’s life. When this evidence is evaluated systematically, the only rational conclusion is that Islam’s lone prophet was a ruthless terrorist, a mass-murderer, a thief, slave trader, rapist and pedophile.
