McConnell dangles aid to states — with a catch

Mitch McConnell is open to cutting a deal to provide reeling states and cities with relief during the pandemic-fueled recession. But it will come at a price.

Video by Fox News

In an interview on Monday, the Senate majority leader said it’s “highly likely” the next coronavirus response bill will aid local governments whose budgets have been decimated by lockdowns and now face spiraling deficits. But to unlock that money, McConnell also wants Congress to limit the liabilities of health care workers, business owners and employees from lawsuits as they reopen in the coming weeks and months.

“We probably will do another bill. What I’m saying is it won’t just be about money,” McConnell said. “The next pandemic coming will be the lawsuit pandemic in the wake of this one. So we need to prevent that now when we have the opportunity to do it.”

In acknowledging that states like New York and New Jersey can count on more federal aid in the next massive relief bill, the Kentucky Republican is cracking the door to an agreement with congressional Democrats after taking a hard line with his recent suggestion that states go “the bankruptcy route.”

But as befits his reputation for tough tactics, he said that would demand that his liability proposal be included in any deal with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Similarly, Pelosi has said that any new coronavirus bill will have to include money for local governments.

Looks like the Republicans are going to cave again and Democrat controlled areas will be on lockdown forever.

Thanks Republicans for screwing America again.

What’s your catch, Midge?

That you don’t throw the Dems into that Vote By Mail briar patch?

Make them renounce sanctuary cities and states if they want federal aid.

Mitch is right.

Without a liability protection for business owners even if Governors allow reopening the commercial insurance underwriters and trial lawyers will make it risky if not financially prohibitive.

This event is a complex problem. Government at all levels is just not equipped to handle problems like this and have failed the public. It’s truly sad.

Screw it. Kill all lawyers! Easier to wipe their asses out rather then them to wipe out businesses. 9mm hollowpoint. Game over!

Predictable. No way NJ or NY should get any money. My idiot governor chose to put us on lockdown for what will be 2.5 months. He can deal with the budget shortfall. And don’t count out mail in voting being here either. Democrats always get what they want and Republicans always cave.

“...the next coronavirus response bill will aid local governments whose budgets have been decimated by lockdowns and now face spiraling deficits.”

When did NPR and the Kennedy Center for the performing arts become their own government?

Our rural locals have 2 police-city services stations. They only need one.

“Thanks Republicans for screwing America again.”

Okay, since the states got themselves into this, let them get themselves out of it....don’t give them anything. They created their own shelter in place status which the feds had nothing to do with. “B-But, Jiminy... - You buttered your bread, now sleep in it.” The libs did this, now they can pay for it.

There is a third choice.

How about having liability protection and no bailouts. Otherwise nothing at all.

Republicans just love to make deals with the devil.

Bailing out states and cities that did it to themselves with there liberal policies is just encouraging them to continue on with the insanity. And the money will used to fund everything Evil.

The states should fix themselves.

I am mad that the Republicans are going bail the Democrats out. The Democrats states will never learn and continue to screw over the people in their states. The Democrats states will continue to hold their people hostage and act like dictators.

Trump needs to have a talk with Mitch as soon as possible. Trump needs to act like a leader.

Throw in election fraud reform. Otherwise, in a few more election cycles, Republicans will never again control the White House, Senate or House.

Looks like the US better start stocking up on printing machines and green paper. Maybe we can get them cheap from China?

I never thought about the liability aspect on businesses by insurance companies and lawyers. Another tool in their criminal bag of tricks to prevent their states from making a full recovery and killing our economy

Albany has already protected nursing homes from both civil AND criminal liability...

Can’t wait to see how Cuomo handles this...

BTW, I agree with you.

No bailouts. Of any state. Period.
