IIRC SCOTUS has ruled that it's illegal to fire someone because of race,gender,etc...but it's *perfectly* legal to fire someone because that employer wants to hire someone who'll do the same work for lower pay...that is,because the person being fired is too expensive to keep.
My guess is that the town's lawyer knows this.

According to the article at least 3 reasons were cited for termination. They sounded legit to me. One was failure to maintain a certification. Pretty important stuff in the fire rescue game IMO.
