At least two Louisiana parishes are set to defy Gov. John Bel Edwards coronavirus stay-at-home order with West Feliciana and LaSalle planning to reopen Friday.
West Feliciana President Kenny Havard said he and other parish leaders will allow restaurants to operate, while LaSalle Sheriff Scott Franklin said there will be a wider opening of businesses there.
Edwards announced Monday he will extend his statewide stay-at-home order to May 15 with only minor revisions on the advice of his medical team. Edwards said he had hoped to begin reopening the state May 1, but too many regions showed COVID-19 case growth.
Havard said he has generally supported Edwards handling of the crisis, but believes the governor should take a regional approach to reopening the government.
Havard said West Feliciana restaurants will be allowed to operate with 25% capacity. He said other guidelines in Edwards order will be followed.
The governor thinks its OK to stand in line at Tonys Seafood in Baton Rouge shoulder to should with people for 30 minutes to get food but not sit at a restaurant table with plenty of space and get served, Havard said. Its not a one size fits all.
