In four U.S. state prisons, nearly 3,300 inmates test positive for coronavirus -- 96% without symptoms

“We weren’t always able to pinpoint where all the cases were coming from,” said Annette Chambers-Smith, director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. As the virus spread, they began mass testing.

They started with the Marion Correctional Institution, which houses 2,500 prisoners in north central Ohio, many of them older with pre-existing health conditions. After testing 2,300 inmates for the coronavirus, they were shocked. Of the 2,028 who tested positive, close to 95% had no symptoms.

“It was very surprising,” said Chambers-Smith, who oversees the state’s 28 correctional facilities.

As mass coronavirus testing expands in prisons, large numbers of inmates are showing no symptoms. In four state prison systems — Arkansas, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia — 96% of 3,277 inmates who tested positive for the coronavirus were asymptomatic, according to interviews with officials and records reviewed by Reuters. That’s out of 4,693 tests that included results on symptoms.

Good places to find those who test positive, I don't see where it says how they were tested.

Do you think they could just be saying they all tested positive just to beef up numbers?

I’ve heard that genetic tests that screen for coronavirus remnants have very poor specificity and are picking up the RNA fragments of ordinary cold infections. Not sure if it is one specific company test, or if all genetic tests have this flaw. It would explain strange results like this.

Ohio jail to release hundreds of inmates amid coronavirus concerns: reports(Fox News Match 16)

This is like Coumo forcing NY Nursing Homes to take Corona patients, tring to spread the illness as quick as possible while using it to justify a shutdown/Stay at Home.

I don't see that either, and that is the one thing I absolutely wanted to know. This story was from the 25th of April, and I recall a Freeper saying awhile back that there have been no US approved tests for Covid 19.

I've read that the Chinese tests are crap, and full of false positives because they test for a wide variety of corona viruses.

So yeah, the method of testing is very important. We can't tell if this is a real story without that bit of information.

Activist judges who want to release undocumented Democrats from jail in the name of protecting them from spread of SARS-CoV-2 within prisons actually need to make sure that prisoners test negative for virus before they do so imo.

I find it interesting is that the numbers now don’t seem to be about death but more about the numbers. 96% have no symptoms and I bet they are recover, But to have almost all off 3300 to have an illness (whether it is really serious or not) makes it sound really really bad.

RE:”Do you think they could just be saying they all tested positive just to beef up numbers?”

These types of numbers send mixed messages:

Message 1: ‘Its spreading so fast that we need tougher more punitive measures for much longer times to control it’ (routers message)

Message 2: ‘Even if I get it I probably won't get sick, besides we all are going to get it anyway’

Putting Corona patients in Nursing homes freed up lots of beds, but NYS may run out of body bags.

Don’t overlook the possibility of carppy tests giving false positives.

Tests “Made in China” lack QC for me to have any faith in the results...

I’d even question the symptoms aspect.

“Do you have symptoms?” “NO”

There are reasons you would say no in prison.

It is the same as testing for Ecoli. A generic test is done for all eColi. Not all are dangerous.

96% didn’t even know they had it. For this we lost 30+ million jobs and most of the country is under house arrest.

That's what I was suspecting is the case with this story. People are categorizing these tests as proof these inmates have the deadly corona virus, and that is not necessarily true.

We live in a world of germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi, mold, mildew, dust, heat, cold, sunlight. The question is how do we adapt to that environment? — and not that we need to ever protect ourselves from such exposures. That’s not the problem — as 96% of the population prove. The problem is the 4% or less who cannot adapt — and are vulnerable to dying from anything — as the people in acute longterm care centers and nursing homes often are.

Many are that way because they don’t care for themselves very well — or at all. But before we all get that way, we can do a lot better job of caring for ourselves — and learning to care for ourselves — rather than to have increasing care by professional caregivers, including the health care industry.

The prison population requires one to maintain some level of being able to look out and care for oneself — because if one doesn’t, nobody else is going to do it for them. The same is also true for the homeless populations. But those receiving 24/7 caregiving, are extremely vulnerable for infections and assaults of any manner. That is what needs to be addressed — and not treating the entire population as though it is equally and randomly vulnerable.

Epidemiologists should at least be doing that — rather than leading the panic and hysteria, along with the equally gullible media, politicians and philanthropists.

No. Because increasing the denominator lowers the fatality rate.

What you will see, now that the reported fatality rate (based on infections not “cases” is dropping to “The Flu” territory, is an emphasis on the number of people with the virus. Now that we “stopping the spread” the goal is now to lower the number of infections. Which is impossible without draconian lockdowns. Versus “fattening the curve” which was intended to lower the death count by not overwhelming the healthcare system.

So now we have switched from OMG people are gonna die to OMG people are getting the virus.

Glad you gave you liberty yet?

I wonder how many would test positive for Hepatitis and whether there is a connection to that and being more susceptible to Covid19.

Excuse me, a prison cannot be any less crowded than NYC. NYC has a death of .108 of those infected. So where are the 330 dead prisoners?

Note we were told 2.2 million Americans would die. So far the number (with the Libs counting every death as a Covid-19 death) stands at 64,203. So that means...… THAT MEANS PRESIDENT TRUMP SAVED OVER 2 MILLION 44 THOUSAND AMERICANS! Thank you President Trump!
