Coronavirus: Amid New York’s unused hospital beds and ventilators, critics point to mass waste and mismanagement

In addition to a bevy of state orders, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made desperate overtures to the federal government to step in. In response, and in record time, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers scrambled to erect at least four field hospitals, and the Navy deployed its USNS Comfort hospital ship to Manhattan.

However, those efforts – and the many millions of dollars spent on them – have largely been deemed a waste, even as New York has battled a soaring a death toll and is maintaining stay-at-home orders. So what happened?

"[The models] have been extremely inaccurate," Dr. David Samadi, a New York-based surgeon, told Fox News. "These models gave a horrifying prediction that suggested COVID-19 could kill anywhere from 200,000 to 1.7 million Americans. Currently, it looks to be more like 60,000 to 65,000 deaths. While any American life lost to this virus is a shame, the death and infection rate is looking not quite so bleak as it was in the beginning."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is in the process of shuttering the much-touted, 2,500-bed Javits Center – having treated only around 1,000 patients over the course of more than a month – The Associated Press reported.

On Thursday, the heralded Navy ship – which was equipped with 1,000 beds and intended to take the burden off other hospitals and treat non-coronavirus patients before finally taking on a handful of those with the infection – sailed away, barely used.

The three additional field hospitals Albany spent many millions on erecting in late March are yet to close, despite treating few, and are standing idle

“...critics point to mass waste and mismanagement...”

I am a very old man and I can tell you that throughout my entire lifetime “mass waste and mismanagement’ Has been the hallmark of NYC and every other major urban hub - Boston, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, etc. There is nothing new here - just true to form - such a pity!!

And there will be even more waste, and mismanagement from Cuomo’s office because he’s closed the Indian Point Nuclear Plant that could have successfully operated for several more decades, and is introducing wind turbine, and solar panel projects, which will more than likely result in even more failure, and more waste of taxpayer funds, just like many of the other projects he’s promoted over the years that have failed, or not even gotten off the ground, despite spending millions on them. It looks like he’s going to run for a 4th term in 2022, so he’s got to get the ball rolling now, so he can line the pockets of his donors with these new green projects in the meantime.

I don't understand why people think Fauci is so great. All of his predictions have been wrong, usually badly wrong. Plus, he has tunnel vision, only analyzing the problem from his narrow specialty. He doesn't factor in the damage his measures are doing to the economy and people's lives. He doesn't even factor in the overall public health picture. His measures are causing people to avoid seeing doctors and emergency rooms, which is causing a lack of revenue to the health care industry and almost certainly future health problems for the untreated patients.

I suppose at some point his explanation will be we had to destroy the village to save it.

So we were told the REAL CRISIS was hospitals getting overwhelmed and running out of test kits and ventilators. Did they really happen in the end? I don’t know and could only know from first hand accounts.

Unlike PDJT largely following the advice of medical experts at national level, I get impression that misguided Democrats were “impersonating” medical personnel in NY state.

What do NY Freepers say?

Send “Orange Man Bad” federal and state government Democrats and RINOs home in November!

Supporting PDJT with a new patriot Congress and state government leaders that will promise to fully support his already excellent work for MAGA and stopping COVID-19 will effectively give fast-working Trump a third term in office imo.

MAGA, also KAGA! (Keep America Great Always!)

On a sorta related note, NY has made another policy change...

Hurlbut Owner Issues Statement Following NYS Nursing Home Staff Policy Change

NYS was allowing asymptomatic positives to care for positives. Now NYS is not.

Okaaaaay....

It’s a liberal run city.
Waste, corruption, mismanagement, and just plain criminality are features.
Top that with a mayor who couldn’t lead flies to fresh, warm Obamastuff, we get New York City.
I really really feel sorry for the folks who live there. Sorry twice, first for their obviously limited mental abilities, and second for their inability to use a ballot correctly.

The media will just blame it all on Trump.

Democrats are never to blame for anything.

You analyzed Dr. doom and gloom perfectly, he has routinely made these wild predictions that treat out to be so far off from anything in reality and continues to focus and one tiny portion of the issue while Noring everything else that he says doesn’t matter.

About 20 years ago in Chicago several pianos were found still in their original packing crates in a Chicago Public school’s supply warehouse. They had been sitting there for more than 30 years. Ruined from neglect even though never used. But everybody needs a raise!! Its the Chicago way!
