In old Britain, a man armed with a bow was considered a FREE MAN even though a subject to the Crown!
In France, they preferred Genoese Crossbowmen mercenaries as they found when you took a French serf and trained him with a bow, he suddenly considered himself a FREE MAN.
When the wars were over, those armed Frenchmen were not willing to give up their arms and return to serfdom slavery.
When the first Englishmen came ashore armed with matchlocks and wheel locks in the Americas, they found no “Lards or Ladies” to give deference to and realized they were truly FREE MEN, and have never backed down.
Dred Scott vs Sandford case recognized that citizens had the rights to “keep and carry arms wherever they went. (Therefore Blacks were not citizens)
