The number of COVID-19 deaths that Virginia counts in long-term care facilities nearly tripled overnight on Friday, rising to 311. The increase came as the state’s top health official shielded nursing homes and other facilities from disclosing cases and deaths, saying the facilities are defined as “people” under state law.
The state’s tally of COVID-19 deaths in long-term care rose from 118 to 311 in one day due to a change in data collection by the Virginia Department of Health. At the same time, the number of confirmed cases increased from 1,537 to 2,412 as the number of outbreaks in nursing homes and assisted living facilities rose from 120 to 132.
The death count rose after state epidemiologists began supplementing data from the Virginia Outbreak Surveillance System with information from the Virginia Electronic Disease Surveillance System, the department said.
State Health Commissioner Norman Oliver resisted calls to begin identifying cases and deaths by facility, as Maryland and North Carolina now do, because he said state law defines a facility as “a person” and protects the data as personal medical information.
“Unless the code changes, I don’t see how you could do it,” Oliver said during a public briefing with Gov. Ralph Northam on Friday.
The explanation surprised Sen. George Barker, D-Fairfax, who has advocated releasing COVID-19 information for individual long-term care facilities.
“I certainly don’t recall it being in the code,” Barker said after the briefing on Friday. “That’s kind of bizarre.”

It looks like a similar thing happened here in Colorado.
Until Thursday the state listed nursing homes with Chinese Cold deaths. That data has been hidden from the public now.

The public website had the “stats” in various graph forms until today. Yesterday the deaths jumped suddenly to 311 for “long-term care facilities.” They went from 22% of the total deaths in the Commonwealth to 54%!!!
Today I could find no info on outbreaks of COVID19 at either the local health district (There are 35 of these and each had individual statistics on outbreaks at L-TC facilities thru yesterday) or at the Commonwealth/State level ...and I spent an hour and a half going thru sublinks trying.

Virginia has been counting nursing home deaths, but not disclosing them as nursing home deaths (over 50% of total deaths). Reinforces the “we are all going to die narrative” and justifies prolonging the shutdown of the state’s economy.

Seems like he’s ripe for a huge challenge in a few years. I grew up in VA, family been there since the the 1700’s. NOVA is unrecognizable now. If you go to Clarendon, Falls Church or even Fairfax/Reston, it’s a disaster.
so essentially the Governor will release “updates” when it best serves him...example to hold off getting INTO phase 1 or getting OUT of phase one!
