Lancaster Woman Imprisoned in Egypt Since Last Summer Is Released

An American schoolteacher imprisoned in Egypt for nearly a year without trial has been freed by Egyptian authorities and returned home to the United States, the State Department said Monday.

Reem Desouky, 47, a dual Egyptian-American citizen and single mother from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was arrested on arrival at the Cairo Airport with her teenage son in July 2019 and hauled off to Qanatir Prison outside the capital. She faced charges of running a Facebook page critical of the Egyptian government. Security officials had confiscated her phone and interrogated her about her political opinions and social medias posts, according to her lawyers. Human rights groups denounced her detention as arbitrary and politically-motivated.

"The Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and welfare of U.S. citizens overseas," said spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus, welcoming the news of Desouky's release.

“Trumped up” charges? Where would they get an idea like that in Egypt? Maybe some unemployed former FBI guys are available to help them.

Maybe she’s a Democrat and will now have an appreciation for the Bill of Rights.

Well, I can hope can’t I?

For those living outside Egypt it is difficult to understand the rationale for their authoritarian government. Egypt is infiltrated with Muslim Brotherhood who operate banks that are not helpful to businesses, try to monopolize certain sectors of the food market to bring about shortages and create mayhem, terror and panic wherever they can. The business interruptions and martial law to restrict transit of foods and goods here in Democrat-run states is only a mild taste of what goes on in Egypt caused by the Brotherhood. Imagine that 10% of your citizens are foreign infiltrators trying to topple the government at every turn. The only way to bring about social order, assured supplies of food to market, impartial banking and just courts, in Egypt is through authoritarian control. Egypt paid a huge price in 2011 when the Brotherhood rigged a national election with the help of Hillary Clinton and Obama that resulted in Mohammed Morsi becoming president on only 10% of the vote. The Brotherhood controlled many polling places and the ballots were never tallied. The Brotherhood just thretened terrorism if they weren’t elected. We are seeing this kind of extortion in the USA now with the revolt of Democrat states to shut down the economy in the hope of toppling Trump at the November elections.

Thanks very much for this post. Opponents of the current Egyptian regime are overwhelmingly muzzard brotherhood moles. There are many nations, and Egypt seems to be one, that work as well as they can with an authoritarian regime which has a Muslim veneer.

No sympathy for dual citizens. Let her live by her Egyptian citizenship and passport while in Egypt. If she has become an American, she should have renounced her Egyptian citizenship. Otherwise, she is American in name only. Bill her for any taxpayer assistance she received, revoke her US citizenship, deport her. Bye.

Renouncing prior citizenship used to be required.
What happened?

Life Lesson:

Do not go to other countries expecting the same protections, permissions and privileges you are accustomed to in the US.
