We saw the same thing when Canada imposed its stupid gun registry some years ago. There were an estimated 6 million firearms in Canada at the time. When only 1 million were registered, the Chretien government simply announced there were only 1 million firearms in total and that they obviously overestimated it. None of the nitwits in government wanted to admit that more than 80% of the gun owners had refused to comply with the law.

Helpful citizens reportedly registered glue guns, grease guns, staple guns, etc, and the expensive government database ended up being largely corrupt and entirely useless...
