Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announces $775m in state budget cuts to education, Medicaid and more

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Gov. Mike DeWine said Tuesday the state will cut nearly $800 million in spending — most affecting education and health care — to offset the loss of tax revenue stemming from the coronavirus crisis.

The cuts include a $300 million reduction in K-12 public-school funding, $210 million from Medicaid spending and $110 million from college and university funding, DeWine said.

DeWine said all state government agencies will see their budgets cut, adding up to $100 million, except for the state Department of Corrections, which operates state prisons.

As recently as the end of February, the state was running ahead of its estimated revenues by $200 million. But as of the end of April, state revenues now are below estimates by $776.9 million, according to DeWine.

Much of the the state’s revenue comes from two sources — income taxes, which are tied to employment, and sales taxes, which are tied to commercial activity. Both have dropped since DeWine closed wide swaths of Ohio’s economy to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

*** “Public employees” will now get to participate in the effects of the lockdown. ***

Heck yes! I want to see some real pain come to these morons who worship DeWine and Acton. I want them to get every bit of the pain they are due, and what I told them was coming.

Tell these idiots about human cost, suicide, physical and substance abuse, homicides, lost careers, they are unmoved. They simply reply with “We all need to be safe, don’t be selfish.” Stupid, unthinking, emotionally stunted fools.

Wait ‘till Beshear has to do this in Kentukcy. He won because the teachers were so ticked at Bevin for trying to clean up our public employee retirement fund crisis.

Education funding in many states is going to get.

My guess - sports and extracurricular problems will be cut. Maybe only see one sport per season. Field trips - gone.

But they’re still nibbling around the edges. Wages and benefits are the big cost in school districts.

At our district here in North Central Louisiana, payroll and benefits are about 85% of budget expenditures.

"Public employees will now get to participate in the effects of the lockdown.”

I have my doubts about that.

But if it does come to pass, the lockdown will end posthaste.

Or privatize them. Get rid of defined benefit plans across the public sector workforce. If they want a known amount per month during retirement, they can buy an annuity like the private sector populace.

That's a probably a similar number to many areas.

In a nearby district, the superintendent asked the teachers to take a pay freeze for one year and the amount would be added back in over the remaining years of the contract. Teachers said no - so ~25 employees were laid off - administrators, teachers, other staff.

There's a good chance they won't be returning any time soon.

The kids are home
The parents are home
The schools are still DELIVERING lunches to those kids.

That is where your tax money gets wasted in your school systems.

They are using the full sized buses in N Nevada to make those deliveries.

IF you can afford your cell phones & your SUV’s, you CAN FEED YOUR OWN KIDS !!!

It’s not about genuine physical poverty. It’s all about entitlement poverty. Entitlement poverty means you should never have to give up the big screen TV, the $300/mo cable services, the unlimited data smart phone, or the second car payment.

Not if you're used to that. It becomes like soft leather - comfortable and something you don't want to give up.

There's already been some people in local essential businesses that have started to call more people back. I expect there there will be some that will not want to go back as they're making more staying home than working at the job.

I'm aware of one local business that called a couple of employees back but they said no. Even though the company modified work spaces to maintain social distancing and employees *already* wear PPE due to the nature of the work. The employees got dismissed.

When unemployment runs out, I think they are going to be struggling to find employment at the rate they were making previously. The company filled the vacant positions within one week.

This level of cuts will not be enough to compensate for the loss of revenues. This is a “for openers” offer. It will be much, much worse.
