Sweden's former top virus expert has launched a blistering defence of the country's coronavirus strategy, saying that lockdowns are merely delaying an inevitable surge in cases and deaths - not preventing it.
Johan Giesecke says attempts to stop the spread of the disease are 'futile' because everyone is likely to be exposed to it before a treatment can be found, meaning all countries will end up in a similar position regardless of what measures they took.
Mr Giesecke predicts that the numbers of infections and cases in Denmark, Norway and Finland - which went into full lockdown - will rise to match those of Sweden - which didn't - as restrictions are eased in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile New Zealand, which has managed to heavily suppress the virus with its lockdown, is now at risk of importing cases from overseas, he says.
The only way to mitigate that risk would be to quarantine all new arrivals for 14 days, with the measure remaining in place for as long as it takes to find a vaccine.
That could take a decade or more, he told Swedish newspaper DN, with the effectiveness of such vaccines as-yet unproven.
In the face of such uncertainty, it is better to let the virus run its course provided infections can be suppressed enough to stop hospitals being overwhelmed, he said.

The total number of deaths will eventually be the same from COVID-19 in those countries that shut down and those that remain open The total deaths from all causes will be less in those countries that remain open since they will not suffer the deprivations involved with economic constriction. This scenario will only be mitigated by the development of a safe, effective, widely available vaccine. Herd immunity will eventually occur, rapidly or slowly. It won’t be pretty to watch the culling of the herd. Not talking about cows.
Perhaps New Zealand is owned by trillionaires and will close itself off from the world as a new Hermit kingdom. Rich folks can go there and escape prosecution.
Kiss away all those cruise tourist dollars. NZ generates a good chunk of its economy from tourists. Several dozen cruises each visiting 3-4 port towns.
All that $$ gone if they impose a 2 week quarantine on international tourists.

We may have very well just taken a bunch of old, sick people who were going to die this year anyway and compressed those deaths within a span of a few weeks.
So if the common cold is caused by a corona virus, we should be able to make a vaccine for Covid just like we did for the cold.

I always wonder: if everyone in the United States, except for just one person, were successfully locked down from the virus and returned to work, then that one person would, over time, cause the same outbreak and require another lock down. That would go on forever.
The lock down happened because no one knew the extent of the damage the virus would cause, (no one knew just what the Chicoms had programmed into it). Now, we have a knowledge base, and it is time to end lock downs and concentrate on protecting the groups that are vulnerable.
