While it may take several days for the declaration of an official winner, early mail-in results Tuesday showed Republican Mike Garcia with a lead against Assemblywoman Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita, in Californias 25th Congressional District special election.
The race will choose who will serve out the remaining eight months in the vacated House seat after former Rep. Katie Hill stepped down last year due to allegations about her personal life that led to a House Ethics Committee investigation.
Both will face off once again in November for the new term after the unexpired term concludes on Jan. 3.
Garcia, a former fighter pilot, led with 55.9% of the vote, or 78,701 votes, according to 100% precinct reporting as of 9 p.m. by the California Secretary of State. Smith received 44.1% (62,054 votes).

Election 2020: Garcia leads Smith early in L.A. Countys 25th Congress race
EXCERPT...
But after a highly competitive race, which had already drawn a huge turnout relative to past stand-alone elections in the state, that result was still in question on Tuesday night.
Ventura County planned to post only its vote-by-mail returns on Tuesday night, not its in-person results. L.A. County, where several centers enabled voters to vote in person, was posting results from early vote-by-mail ballots received before Tuesday. Then, the registrar will post results from Election Day in-person votes. The rest of the votes will be counted through the remainder of the week.
The registrar has until June 1 to certify the election.
Theyll have to get to work and harvest a lot of votes, but I wouldnt doubt that they can.
in the lead by more than 50% of the vote? Someone needs to either learn a little math or how to write.
Have they called it for the democrat yet? You know they will.
Think positively
Of course. They gave a state house race national headlines where Dems won a couple of years ago...a congressional seat swinging by double digits...crickets.
Only a Democrat writer would assume that a candidate who gets more than 50 percent of the vote would still lose!
Still plenty of time to cheat him out of a victory with mail-in ballot. Hide and watch.
