The most comprehensive national study to date has found that convalescent plasma appears to be safe to use on COVID-19 patients, a promising development in the race to find a treatment for the deadly virus. But the study didn't determine whether the treatment works.
A team of more than 5,000 doctors from over 2,000 hospitals and laboratories have been testing the experimental therapy, which involves transfusing the antibody-rich blood serum of recovered COVID-19 patients into people who are battling the illness.
Of the 5,000 seriously ill patients who received blood plasma transfusions for the study, fewer than 1 percent experienced serious adverse events. The mortality rate seven days after treatment was 14.9%, but the researchers noted the infusion patients were already gravely ill and the rate "does not appear excessive."
We're encouraged that the treatment is safe, Dr. Michael Joyner, a physiologist at the Mayo Clinic and the principal investigator of the study, told NBC News. That was really the first hurdle for us. And showing that it's safe gives us confidence to move on and begin to try to understand the efficacy.
The study, co-authored by researchers at institutions including Michigan State University and Johns Hopkins, hasnt undergone peer review or publication in a scientific journal. Results were posted on MedRxiv so that other scientists and physicians could quickly review the data.
I've never put a paper on a preprint server before in my life, and I've published almost 500 papers, Joyner said. We wanted to get them out there to the treating physicians and the general public as soon as we could.
Joyner said the researchers will start receiving data on the treatments effectiveness in the next few weeks. He expects to have a much clearer picture within the next several months.

Drinking water to treat Covid has been approved since it is safe. Don’t know if it works.
Methods:
...we analyzed key safety metrics after transfusion of ABO-compatible human COVID-19 convalescent plasma in 5,000 hospitalized adults with severe or life threatening COVID-19, with 66% in the intensive care unit, as part of the US FDA Expanded Access Program for COVID-19 convalescent plasma
Results:
The incidence of all serious adverse events (SAEs) in the first four hours after transfusion was <1%, including mortality rate (0.3%). Of the 36 reported SAEs, there were 25 reported incidences of related SAEs, including mortality (n=4), transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO; n=7), transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI; n=11), and severe allergic transfusion reactions (n=3). However, only 2 (of 36) SAEs were judged as definitely related to the convalescent plasma transfusion by the treating physician. The seven-day mortality rate was 14.9%.
Conclusion:
Given the deadly nature of COVID-19 and the large population of critically-ill patients included in these analyses, the mortality rate does not appear excessive. These early indicators suggest that transfusion of convalescent plasma is safe in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.
“The mortality rate seven days after treatment was 14.9%, but the researchers noted the infusion patients were already gravely ill and the rate “does not appear excessive.””
I hope I never end up in one of these studies where they intentionally wait until you’re damned near dead so they can study you.
“...But the study didn’t determine whether the treatment works...”
Let’s see now...since water is not SOLD BY BIG PHARMA for big bucks...oh, wait...it is supposed to be declared dangerous and unproven like HCQ...where is Doctor Doom when we need him to save us?...protect us from safe therapies...
If the death rate after treatment after HCQ was 14.9% do you think they would bury that three paragraphs down?
Lets see now...since water is not SOLD BY BIG PHARMA for big bucks...
Dont give them any ideas!

Wow.... a team of more than 5,000 doctors tested convalescent plasma therapy on 5,000 patients. I guess they had no shortage of doctors.
Texags site Drs have used it and it has been successful
they have used the Genentech drug and been successful.
A Dr gives HQC early on and has been successful. If you get the symptoms anywhere near Garland Tx you might want to go to him as a Dr. He gives daily updates on COvid19.
Gin and tonic(quinine) in reasonable doses is safe.
“But the study didn’t determine whether the treatment works”
I’ll take my chances.
That struck me, too. Sure the test subjects were very ill, but 15% died!?
I wonder how many were going to die without the treatment. 16%? 20%? 50%?
“It’s safe, but it’s not known if it works.”
it’s also not scalable ...
Probably doesn’t have a 14.9% mortality rate?
You gotta be close to on your last breath and probably whacked out of your mind on drugs before they even let you try, then they use that as the excuse you died and skewed their desired results. At least it isnt an excessive amount to them.
