Gov. Newsom wants to shrink California prisons as part of budget cuts

Newsom is proposing to significantly shrink the footprint of California’s prison system, partly because of massive budget cuts prompted by the pandemic but also because of philosophy.

The revised budget he sent to state lawmakers this week closing two state prisons in the coming years; cutting nearly one in five of the 43 inmate firefighter camps; and eventually closing all three state-run juvenile prisons.

He’s also seeking unspecified increases to sentencing credits that allow inmates to leave prison more quickly. And he proposes to shorten parole to a maximum of two years, down from five years for felonies, and let ex-felons earn their way off supervision in just a year, or 18 months for sex offenders.

The Democratic governor called it a “core value” of his administration to eliminate prisons and invest more in education.

But if they break the law again after release, THEN they are in REAL TROUBLE.

What could go wrong with that plan?

I'm guessing he's planning ahead as even more Kali residents flee the state.

IF you want to cut down on the prison population you must start deporting the millions of ILLEGALS in your state. Would solve a plethora of problems.

But you go ahead Gavin. Pretend to not notice.

One of the few things that I want government to do is keep dangerous people off the streets. That is what they decide to cut.

>>Newsom is proposing to significantly shrink the footprint of California’s prison system<<

and increase the footprint of California’s crime landscape.

What does he care? He and his rich cronies have armed personal security as well as taxpayer-supplied armed guards for state officials.

This philosophy has already bit him and other Govrnors in the ass with newly released criminals committing more crimes.

Great idea about eliminating the convict fire camps. /s From experience, I know they mostly cut fire breaks and clear brush. They are NOT on the front lines as Hotshots. They are back up.

Okay, to be honest, I was stationed at a juvenile detention fire-fighting camp (Saugus, CA) back in 1967 for a time. Not only cutting fire breaks, we actually fought brush/grass fires. After I shortly left, my crew #4 was caught in a flareup that raced up a hill and were all destroyed. It was much like what happened to the Granite Mountain Hotshots in the movie. I lost 2 friends. I had that survivor guilt going for a while. They stopped sending juveniles into fires.

Don't know what they do with adult convict fire-fighters, so my above may be wrong.

Because Prop. 47, no cash bail, and releasing inmates over COVID fears wasn’t enough to escalate crime in the state.

There used to be 100s of firecamps, but in the 1990s, between Clinton and California democRATs, they were greatly reduced. The dead undergrowth multiplied, becoming fuel for forest fires. When I studied archeology I learned that Native Americans would purposely burn out that undergrowth to prevent massive forest fires. Billy Boy Clinton even destroyed the forest firebreaks and fire roads that humans used to put out forest fires. My favorite example to the environmental wackos is the phrase ‘I’ve never seen a squirrel pick up a hose and put out a fire.’

I suggest a one-for-one exchange of prisoners for politicians.

Just stack ‘em up 10 to a room like the other 3rd world states do.

(Implication that CA is a 3rd world state TOTALLY intended)

Liberals and progressives. I don’t know if they plan things or if their philosophy just leads to things. Why do children not play outside? Criminals and people who would victimize them. Why do parents not stay home with their kids? Cost of living too high so both parents have to work. What is the progressive solution? Increase the danger. Parents then have to put their kids in day care and after school programs. This gives progressives more jobs and also more time to indoctrinate children.

Give inmates a map to the governor’s home. Lots of room there as it’s a “big house.”

When leftists are aiming for more taxes, or not enough bugetary money, they always begin with threatened, then active cuts to infrastructures that make citizens feel safe.
Police
Fire
Medical care
Teachers

And now they’ve stooped to threatening cuts for prisons.

Each targeted safety infrastructure cost reduction has the ultimate goal of causing fear...which motivates the movement toward the revenue increase they’re playing to gain.

Here is the leftist move they want to telegraph “unless we get a bailout, we’re going to release prisoners in your neighborhood”. They want us afraid, so we would look for them “save us”.

A free press would have exposed this
And also exposed the waste, fraud and abuse that got these municipalities, counties and states in the mess that their in. Which tells everyone who’s side the press chooses.
