Psychological toll of reopening to further divide between 'haves' and 'have-nots'

Anxieties and fears will undoubtedly heighten for Americans as more states reopen under the novel coronavirus crisis, despite no vaccine and not enough widespread testing.

Yet like the virus' impact, the psychological impact of reopening will be disproportionate. It is bound to deepen the already-stark divide in the country between the haves and the have-nots -- those who can choose when they'd like to return to normal life and those who have been deemed essential to keep working.

"The haves have a choice and the have-nots do not have a choice," Dr. Priscilla Dass-Brailsford, an associate professor of psychology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, told ABC News.

Dass-Brailsford said the majority of Americans will experience some form of anxiety, fear or paranoia as they step back out into the world.

"I wonder whether this person has COVID-19," she said some will think as they interact with more people.

"You're gonna hit the elevator buttons with your elbows… Some of us, I think, will continue to wear face masks" even after the pandemic is over, she added.

"You wish you could turn the clock back and things could just be the same thing," she said.

With the coronavirus outbreak, these anxieties are heightened, because the finish line still looks blurry.

"If it's a car accident or a terrorist bombing, you know how many people died," she said. "With this pandemic, this one in particular, we do not have an endpoint."

The Leftists are trying to scare us and end up scaring only themselves. Also, this is a lame attempt to provide “ammo” to Dem Governors to keep their states (and people) locked down...

Really? She talked to a majority of the American population?

This divide is among melodramatic paranoid nutjobs and people who know how to wash their hands and not touch their faces. People who understand that a mask is helpful when the wearer is ill and in an enclosed place versus those who wear one while exercising outside. People who will use anything as an excuse to slow down versus those that will go over the obstacle.people who send virus positive patients back to nursing homes and rehab facilities versus those who isolate virus positive people.

I have a few more, but I think these are the top few.

We have a weekly Zoom q/a with HR. Most of the discussion in the recent webinars is returning to our regular work spaces. If some of the people weren’t identifying themselves when they typed in their questions, I would think that a whole bunch of people were trolling HR.

We are supposed to cling to Mommy Government for protection and sustenance?

*************

Yep, dependency leads to weakness which makes people easy to control.

Most of those that desire and/or demand that we stay in in-lock down, have not missed a paycheck.

it is mostly dems who are afraid of reopening the country. Some of them are afraid because a reopened country will be on the road to recovery by election time, which might benefit Trump. Others are afraid because they have been whipped into a panic by the lying media and dishonest politicians. The media/dem complex is now led by feminized hysterical “men” and hysterical women, a perfect perscription for fear and hatred.

Here’s a different take on the divide: the percentage of jobs that can be done from home goes up with income and class.

For the well-paid knowledge workers, often in two income homes, working from home is celebrated as a money-saving opportunity. You make just as much money but aren’t going out. Half or more are working from home in the 100K category.

For the middle class, 25% or so can work from home, others are essential like nurses and mechanics. Some can take up food delivery to earn extra money.

For the lower class, 5% can work from home. They either work in risky jobs like construction already or are working with people stocking shelves and taking care of the elderly. Greater risk, or they have no income AND no savings.

The liberal elites are hating on the working and middle class demanding for things to be re-opened. Others protest the insanely unfair double standards like “government building lawns are maintained but I’m arrested if I cut others’ grass” and “kayaking OK, motorboating not”.

Yes. And continue said sacrifices to satisfy Mad Mommy Earth. They’ve got flawed computer models to prove that, too.

Exactly; everybody gets paid minimum wage, politicians, doctors, lawyers, professors, everybody.

It would be a hoot to see these characters try to live on a working man’s salary.

You are exactly right, sphinx. Shared pain of similar or same hardships does make for greater stability as the views become for similar.

I have heard some women saying “It’s not too bad not having any income right now. We have saved for a long time.” And I am sure that is correct, too. But what if the saving are exhausted and the future rears it complex head and they don’t have enough money even with SS? the they will experience what so many young people are experiencing today and that is the threat of starvation...certainly losing homes and “stuff” that hasn’t been completely paid for.

Our whole response was not thoughtfully pre=planned. I think that is not the fault of the administration as they have had far to much to do with all the DEM lies, but the scientists should have been making proposals as they saw the danger long ago....at least when i was in graduate school and we discussed the problems associated with pandemics.
