In the OR the mask is combined with sterile gown and gloves as well as hospital laundered scrubs. The face is never touched once the mask is on. Sterile drapes are used to minimize exposure of the surgical field. The mask is discarded after one use as intended. Far cry from the snot rags people are wearing improperly T the grocery store, hanging on their rear view mirror and using again and again

well now, doctors and nurses are doing what they do in what amounts to a sterile environment, aren’t they...? A surgeon is making incisions in bodies and both blood and bodily fluids abound, making infection a real threat...but if you think going to a supermarket or a pharmacy requires that we gown up, because doctors are doing so, well, go for it...

Surgeons and other surgical attendants also often wear full facial shields or goggles (for eye protection), as well as surgical caps.
