It is one of the nations worst affected by coronavirus, but on Sunday, Spain recorded its lowest daily number of deaths in months.

Authorities on Sunday said another 87 people had died with COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, which is a huge drop from the more than 900 deaths a day during the disease's peak.

It is also the lowest daily number of deaths since 16 March - recorded several days after the country first declared a state of emergency.

Fernando Simon, head of health emergency coordination in Spain, warned the latest figures could be affected by a delay in recording deaths due to the "weekend effect", but assured a downward trend was still in progress.

He said Sunday's drop in numbers to under 100 was "good news".

Advertisement Spain is one of the hardest hit countries in the world by the coronavirus, with 277,719 infections recorded among its population of 47 million.

A total of 27,650 people have died with the disease.

Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez has also revealed his plans to ask parliament for another extension to the national emergency - which he hopes will be the last of its kind in place until the end of June.

He has also highlighted the need to open the country's vital tourism sector that accounts for 12% of GDP, and which is expected to be severely hampered over the summer season.

"Spain needs tourism," Mr Sanchez said, adding: "But tourism needs security. It needs health guarantees."

Wonder if Spain’s numbers were inflated?

At the peak, Spain had 6,500-8,000 new cases a day, and 750-950 deaths a day. For the past two weeks, the new cases have averaged about 2,200 a day and the deaths about 180 a day. Unlike, the US, they have seen a fairly steady and fairly steep decline in new cases and new deaths.

The same holds true for Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Switzerland and Israel. Some of these countries have seen a drop of 75%-80% from the peak.

Do you wonder why there is never any scientific explanation of why the death counts are getting lower????

Why hospitalizations are going lower????

Could it be that people getting TREATMENT now more quickly and with SOMETHING that might be successful? ... thereby avoiding hospitalization and death? ... as opposed to the beginning when people were waiting until they couldn’t breath to get treatment, plus not know ‘how’ to treat them.

You would think they would be telling us that in every article that mentions “counts are going down”... WHY they are going down.

Why the decline? Due to the lock down or is the virus starting to burn itself out? In NYC, over 60% of new cases are people staying at home rather than those who are out and about.

"Why the decline?"

I don't know why some countries are seeing these steep declines, whereas others - the US, the UK, Canada, Poland - have seen a much slower and less dramatic decline.

Possible factors include: (1) different treatment methods; (2) different lockdown protocols; (3) better handling of vulnerable populations; (4) diet/general health of the population; (5) different criteria for determining cause-of-death; (6) climate; (7) and fudging the numbers.

The downturns in Belgium, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Israel have been spectacular, and Spain's has been almost as good.

I think Americans, Brits, Canadians are fatter and more obese generally than Spaniard or French or Italians. That may be why.

In my opinion:

A lot of starch & sugars in their diets. Americans, Brits, & Canadians have generally more affluent economies. So food is more then plentiful. Affluence creates a tendency for a sedentary lifestyle. Also in general the weather is much worse then Spain, Italy, etc. that pushes one toward the sedentary lifestyle

I don’t know why these deaths are falling so dramatically around the world. Part of it is the s.d. and other personal precautions but I think the other part is they have no reluctance to use HCQ and zinc. It’s probably why Africa hasn’t been wiped out since you can buy it over the counter. Also, mandatory TB vaccinations might also help.

Obesity is one of the top two risk factors.

Sunlight may be a factor as well. There is not much sun in the British Isles.
