Virginia City That Voted Obama Twice Just Threw Democrats Out Of Office
Daily Caller ^ | 20 May 2020 | SCOTT MOREFIELD

Three Democratic members of the Staunton, Virginia, city council were ousted by Republicans on Tuesday despite receiving more votes than they did four years ago.

Republican candidates Mark Robertson, Amy Darby, and Steve Claffey all joined incumbent Andrea Oakes in a four-seat GOP sweep, WHSV reported. The three incoming council members replaced Democratic incumbents Erik Curren, Ophie Kier, and James Harrington all almost doubled their vote totals from 2016, yet still lost.

Local outlet Augusta Free Press reporter Chris Graham called the results “stunning almost beyond words.”

“Democrats got their voters out better than they have in a May cycle in years,” Graham wrote. “Republicans got turnout more akin to, not quite a presidential year, but approaching gubernatorial.”

Graham cited gun control legislation in the state as well as COVID-19 lockdowns as key turnout drivers for Republicans in the city.

Overall voter turnout was 4,320, the Augusta Free Press reported, with a total of 17,279 votes cast.

“For comparison to previous cycles, the 2018 local election had 7,068 votes cast for three seats, which would work out to 2,356 individual voters turning out,” wrote Graham. “Back in 2016, the most recent, until Tuesday, four-seat election, the total cast was 6,325, or 1,581 individual voters.”

Incumbent city council member Andrea Oakes reportedly received around the number compiled in the city by Ed Gillespie in 2017 and Ken Cuccinelli in 2013, striking for a local election and indicative of a huge turnout from GOP voters.

Out of office dim bulb crats should be painlessly put down (in the manner described for killing born babies by the Virginia physician pretend governor). After all, if it’s good enough for defenseless babies, it’s more than good enough for corrupt, dishonest felononious dim bulb crats.

Only very slightly kidding.

Here is what one of the comments said: “This is a big deal. Staunton is a Liberal town like a poorer version of Charlottesville. It’s full of hipsters and NPR type lefties who moved down from the NE to get the cheaper housing then took over the city council and other offices like they usually do. They must be in shock at this. LOL..”

Nearby Wayesboro also put two conservatives, Lana Williams and Bruce Allen, on their city council to “give conservatives a working majority,” Graham reported.

Not an isolated event.

Agreed. It will take more than a small town council election to evidence a red wave.

Just keep the fires stoked for another six months....

That’s when we shall REALLY need the directed anger.

Remember, Democrats at every level want you locked down and out of work.

Is that what YOU want?

ok, so now we have 4,000 souls in a city council election, and a dude on disqus.

not criticizing, but I would be very hesitant to project trends in a national presidential election on that basis.

There's nothing wrong with celebrating this small victory for our side. I'm hoping this is a trend that will continue into November. Let's hope the democrats continue to act like dick-tators over the next few months.

Well last month there was a Republican sweep in the north burbs of Philly and 2 recent House seats won by GOP, including the one in CA. Reason for hope.

Yes, and just importantly; Republicans need to take over the school boards.

Not an isolated event.

It may not apply on a national level. It may be a reaction to the Governor and legislature who have passed a bunch of idiotic gun legislation and the stupid SOB "Blackface" Governor just vetoed bipartisan legislation to enable the self employed to get reasonable health insurance
