Ex-NFL player Don Carey [“backed by Republicans”] elected to Chesapeake council, ousting longtime councilman Dwight Parker

CHESAPEAKE - Chesapeake’s City Council will skew a bit younger with the election of Don Carey, a 33-year-old retired NFL player. He easily beat longtime councilman Dwight Parker, 70, who lost his seat even as two other incumbents were re-elected. Carey had the strongest showing of all seven council candidates in the race for three at-large seats, with his 17,502 votes edging out Debbie Ritter’s 17,374, according to the latest unofficial results released Wednesday after officials finished counting a historically large number of absentee ballots.

Parker, who served as vice mayor from 2006 to 2008, lost his bid for another term. The retired educator’s turnout of just shy of 13,000 votes was not enough, placing him fifth. He served a total of roughly 18 years over two stints after first being elected in 1995. Parker, who was backed by the Chesapeake Democratic Committee, congratulated the Republicans, who backed West, Carey, Ike and Ritter, saying they were well organized and executed by reaching out to and contacting their constituents.

“I don’t think the Democrats did that,” Parker said. “We need to take a page out of the Republican playbook.” The coronavirus pandemic also didn’t help — Parker said it hindered the ability to reach his base at local churches.

The excuse the Democrat gave about not being able to reach out at churches doesn’t wash because the same applies to Republicans.

It’s a lockdown has become a big issue and will not be forgotten soon I think

It may have something to do with Blue Governors and Mayors dragging their feet to open their cities for business.
The constant resetting of Goal Posts. Now, some won’t be open till almost Labor Day.

Not all of the Dem run states are this way, but quite a few to make it more than a coincident. People are noticing this, as their personal funds are getting low, as their doctor appointments get postponed/ rescheduled again. No schools.

“Who’s going to help me put my routines back together again?
Landlords are not going to wait forever for the back rent.
Some states are not offering very many solutions in the meantime. This is recent knowledge, based on what we have all experienced since early March.

Chesapeake went for Trump in 2016, albeit narrowly (48%-46.7% for the Butcheress of Benghazi). It voted for Zero in 2008 (50.2%) and 2012 (49.9%).

"…results released Wednesday after officials finished counting a historically large number of absentee ballots."

Probably deployed armed forces personnel. The DOD has a huge presence in the Hampton Roads region.

Why do you support this trend? He’s a Democrat.

Although you didn’t learn that until the third sentence in the second paragraph.

Also, I guess this probably was predictable.

You had an old guy facing a young, probably popular football player.

I’m pretty sure Carey is the young NFL guy. Not sure which party (independent?), but he was backed by the Republicans. The older guy was backed by the Dems.

I’m pretty sure the gun control bills are driving a lot of it.

Perhaps the Republican workers in Virginia have finally gotten off their now unemployed backsides and voted for the party that wants to get them back to work.

Now, if the dumbassed Democrat workers (not the liberal/marixist elites who have high paying jobs) wake up and realize that the Democrats put them out of work and onto unemployment/welfare or no job at all, vote intelligently, we will take back a lot of Virginia from Gov. Dr. Mengele Northam, his accused rapist Lt. Gov (2 accusations) and the Soros Marxist Beria wannabe State’s Attorney General Mark “Red” Herring.

Perhaps the Second Civil War is now starting in the home of the First Civil War and the Party of Lincoln will win again.

The Republican Party supported the 4 people who won. Popular player? Complete unknown to me and I follow the NFL pretty well. Norfolk State grad. Mostly special teams and a backup role in the secondary in the NFL.

And this looks like the positions are non-partisan so I don’t know where you got that he is a Dem. I see no mention of it in the article:

“...a historically large number of absentee ballots.”

This is the interesting part.

GOP backed the top 4 candidates. There were 3 open seats.

This is the interesting part.

A thought: maybe the GOP has figured out the strategy for getting its voters to vote absentee/by mail, better than the Democrats.

If this was true what would we expect to see?

1. A few test runs like the very surprising results from the California special election and the two Virginia local elections

2. Trump coming out strongly against vote by mail, to encourage all the Democrats to be in favor of it.
