The threat was real.
The lock down prevented many deaths and gave much needed time to prepare, to ramp ppe, and to develop treatment protocols.
But lock downs can't last forever and early on Trump acknowledged the cure can't be worse than the disease.

Looking backwards and seeing the results WITH a lock down and assuming that the projections WITHOUT a lock down were wrong is like:

assuming your child's measles vaccine wasn't necessary because your child never got the measles.
assuming you didn't need to cook that pork chop because you didn't get sick from eating a cooked pork chop.
assuming homeowners insurance is useless because your house never burned down.
standing in the road is safe, because you didn't get run over on the sidewalk.
thinking Joe Biden has a brain because he didn't say anything stupid when his handlers were hiding him in his basement.
thinking Hillary wouldn't have continued to sell our country out because she hasn't sold our country out since Trump has been president.
assuming it was a waste of government money to lock Jeffery Dahlmer up because nobody has been cannibalized since Dalhmer was locked up.
claiming the border wall was unneccessary because illegal immigrant crossings are down since the wall was built.

Niall Ferguson at the Imperial College, London, U.K., predicted 2,200,000 American deaths from COVID-19, a number as absurd an affront to "science" then as it is now.

Ferguson didn't stop there. He grossly over predicted deaths in Sweden which did not mandate draconian mitigation policies.

The Imperial College prediction was 40,000 Swedish deaths by May 1, 2020, in a nation that didn’t stupidly crash its economy trying to make the cure worse than the disease.

In reality there were 2680 deaths in Sweden by May 1 , 2020, attributed to COVID-19. That means the Imperial College scaremongers over-predicted Swedish COVID-19 deaths by a factor of almost 15.

This is purse evil.

When progressives use the phrase “question science,” what they mean is that no one should question the leftist politicization of science.
They see science not as a method of observation and investigation, but as a belief system that it is blasphemy to “deny,” at least when its conclusions conform to their agenda. Leftists are perfectly comfortable denying science – basic biology, for example – when it doesn’t suit their political needs.

I think you hit on something pretty insightful that isn’t obvious at first. What a great opportunity the Democrats are having to send money to their base and union members to keep their campaign funds coming in, meanwhile keeping the unemployment rate high so that Republicans are strapped for cash and can’t make campaign contributions. The Democrats always find a way to profit from the misery of others. This time it has worked beyond their wildest hopes.
