"A federal judge doesn’t typically hire private counsel to respond to an appeals court" Unsure if the appeals court will allow this.

The Court of Appeals is asking him to explain his decision not to dismiss the case. He cannot farm his judicial duties out to a private lawyer.

I was unaware of Senator Ted Stevens’ case and had to look it up. He went through his own hell. After the case against him was dismissed in 2009:

“He wanted legislation passed to spare others the injustice he endured — especially those who do not have 12 lawyers representing them.”

It doesn’t sound like much has changed since then.
