Police Killing of Breonna Taylor Fuels Calls to End No-Knock Warrants

Growing outcry over the police killing of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old black emergency-room technician, in her Louisville, Ky., home is stoking calls to end the use of no-knock warrants like the one officers secured to raid her apartment.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Thursday it was opening an investigation into Ms. Taylor’s death. The same day the Louisville police chief, Steve Conrad, said he would retire. Earlier this month Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear urged state and federal investigators to review the Louisville Metro Police Department’s internal investigation of the shooting.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul and U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, both Kentucky Republicans, are calling for the elimination of no-knock warrants, which allow police to storm a residence without first announcing their presence.

The warrants have generated controversy in the U.S. for years, and some police departments have discontinued or restricted their use after raids went awry.

Together with the February killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man shot and killed in southeastern Georgia, the case has focused attention on issues of race and law enforcement.

Ms. Taylor was asleep in bed with her boyfriend, 27-year-old Kenneth Walker, when three plainclothes police officers broke through her apartment’s front door early in the morning on March 13, according to a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by her family against the officers. Investigators said an alleged drug dealer they were pursuing had received packages at Ms. Taylor’s home, according to a search warrant affidavit.

Attorneys for Ms. Taylor’s family said police burst in without warning, leading the couple to believe they were intruders. Police said that although officers had a no-knock warrant, they still knocked several times and announced themselves.

Well that article is just unbelievable. Not that I don’t believe it. It’s that police dept which must be corrupt to the core. The cops screw up, then try to cover their screw-up by framing the boyfriend for attempting to kill a cop (i.e. he was defending himself from what he naturally thought were intruders breaking into his home). So the cops then lie to a grand jury about the incident.

If those boys in blue in that dept keep it up, there’s only one thing left or them; working for the FBI.

I remember that. The War on Drugs costs more than it is worth, especially in terms of freedom.

“”if you start pushing in my door then there is lead coming down range!””

As it should in any patriot’s home. As someone else said in an email to me recently, a lot of gun safes are being unlocked and remaining unlocked. Oh - wait until the blue state governors get wind of that! A new cause for them. They’ll have to go back to the drawing board and make NEW promises for reelection.

Did the police find the “evidence” they were looking for in the course of the raid?

No.

Did the police at least break into the right house? (Half the time it seems the police broke into the wrong address.)

Yes.

They got their information from a CI that shall remain nameless.

Where have I heard that story before.

No knock warrants have to go. No way the founders would support something like this.

Police said that although officers had a no-knock warrant, they still knocked several times and announced themselves.

Well, even above that, criminals have been known to impersonate the police to get the upper hand on their victims.   Police Officers must only function with badges and ID clearly presented for citizens to verify.   Skullduggery must not be a tool of the police officials in a free society.

Capone's men wore police uniforms and had badges on St. Valentine's Day in Chicago.

“Smells like BS ... why would they go to the trouble of getting a no-knock warrant, and then knock?” No “side of a story” there - must suck to have to battle straw men because you can’t rebut what’s actually been said.

Criminals have been known to use someone else’s address as a drop box for mailed drugs, they pick up the package while the homeowner is out.

I think there was a case where the delivery driver was in on it.

No more no knock raids.

Hya Sport! I must be thinking of another case. I don’t remember the copsuckers commenting on this event. Or maybe I just missed them/it.

Capone's men wore police uniforms and had badges on St. Valentine's Day in Chicago.

Well, in that case they probably were actually policemen on the take.

why would they go to the trouble of getting a no-knock warrant, and then knock?

And that assessment is from how many years you were in law enforcement? I could just as easily assume they got the no-knock anticipating certain precautions, but when they got there, they decided those precautions weren’t needed.

"Fine with me."

Me too.

How many times has this happened-the LEO's bust in, and innocent people end up dead due to error? Too many.

Seems like they could just as easily knock and avoid tragedy.

"Until body camera evidence emerges it’s safe to assume the cops are lying."

Mr. Walker, who has a license to carry a firearm, shot at them, according to his attorney, and struck one of the officers, according to police. Officers responded by firing more than 20 bullets, at least eight of which hit and killed Ms. Taylor, according to family attorneys. No drugs were found at Ms. Taylor’s home, and she had no criminal record, the attorneys said.

From the comments @WSJ:

"Totally outrageous that Mr. Walker was arrested. Three men in plain clothes break into his girlfriends home, probably with guns drawn. Mr. Walker attempts to defend her and himself and the police kill her. Repeatedly, we have read the police justifications for shooting a person be as flimsy as they thought he had something in his hand. Here we have three officers not even in uniform breaking into a house very late at night. Certainly Mr. Walker had every right and duty to fire. Even if they did declare themselves before or after breaking in, so what? How does Mr. Walker know it isn't some ruse? We defend the police by saying they have to make split second decisions or die. Well, cannot Mr. Walker use that same excuse? Frankly, I am surprised police want to do this. With the huge percentage of the population armed, breaking into a "man's" castle is a dangerous proposition. "
