Its very sad, but a lot of the more organized churches - Catholic, Episcopalian, major Protestant denominations - have rushed to close their churches or at least make access more difficult, even before government orders in some cases. And on a local level, some pastors and leaders have even exceeded their state restrictions. Theyre just trying to show what good little minions of the state they are.
The CA folks have got to appeal to the SC or perhaps sue At a federal level. I even think, despite the actions of individual bishops or local church authorities, any such suit might be joined by the big churches themselves at a national level.
Trump has already given his support and practically invited such suits, and the DOJ has already issued warnings about the treatment of the churches.
I read this morning that Lori Lightfoot had her Chicago police goons pounding on the doors of a mostly black Baptist Church there and shouting through loudspeakers at them to desist and come out. It must have been terrifying but the pastor and congregation hung in there (fortunately, the police stopped short of breaking down the doors and throwing flash-bangs) and are now filing suit.
And they are trying to show how woke they are, especially now that the POTUS has said churches should reopen.
They want to show that they are more "compassionate" than DJT because they are all about keeping people "safe" but the POTUS is only worried about the economy (/s)

Sounds like Federal Marshalls will need to surround the church next week to keep the local constabulary at bay.
Shades of Little Rock, AR during the Eisenhower years.
