NBC Opinion: Trump's coronavirus lies and propaganda suggest America needs its own 'perestroika'
NBC "News" / Comcast ^ | May 25, 2020 | By Nina Khrushcheva

President Donald Trump opened his April 13 coronavirus news briefing with a video compilation of media clips touted his pandemic-fighting achievements. Team Trump had selectively cut and edited quotes from journalists and governors, who had regularly cited the dangerous lack of White House support during the pandemic, so they appeared to praise his leadership.

I hadn’t seen anything like this sort of propaganda display since the 1980s Soviet Union. I was suddenly transported back 40 years to my childhood, watching on TV as the aging Soviet patriarch Leonid Brezhnev endlessly pinned medals to his own chest.

Today’s COVID-19 reality has, in similar fashion, exposed many of America’s sores of inequality as the virus ravages communities of color and deepens the economic divide between the wealthy and everyone else. The United States could likely learn a great deal from the Soviet Union’s attempted program of serious reconstruction - which exposed the Kremlin’s decades of lies and sought to address them.

Even so, the pandemic has ripped away America’s delusion of eternally winning - perfected to absurdity by Trump - and exposed staggering economic inequality and racial discrimination across the nation.

This coronavirus experience could lead to an American version of Perestroika. The United States has a better chance than the Soviet Union to pull through. The world misses Washington’s leadership, which had won over so many people around the globe during the Cold War. This leadership will become even more convincing if it comes from the renewed United States - one that values social wellbeing of the public before the profits of the few.

“....to put an ineligible enemy agent in the White House.”

This could be interpreted for many of our presidents depending on which party you profess. But you might want to think of it another way:

Politicians don’t appear in the limelight, they are hired by the people through the vote. Clean up the vote, which will help clean up the politicians. You won’t get them in one fell swoop. But Rome wasn’t built in a day either.

The people need to stand up and grow a pair. They have to realize they have not been screwed over the last 60+ years....they screwed themselves.

I had hoped with the election of Trump some of it would come into focus. It has, but not enough. The voters have to keep finding and voting in the “mavericks” in the offices to no longer hide in the shadows, but light all of them up to include those that hide anti-American people in other shadows. Trump started it, hopefully the people will continue it. But that has to happen in November and beyond.

There was only one office which the founders insisted must be a natural born citizen and NONE of our elected OR appointed stood for the Constitution.

They feared being called the "R" word more than they respected the constitution.

“...a natural born citizen...”

Interesting that the actual first natural born citizen to become president was Martin Van Buren as he was born in the little town of Kinderhook, NY, in 1782. He served in 1837 to 1841. Took that long to run out of politicians that were from other countries at the time of the creating of the US.

They still don’t have it right as the opportunity for foreign born presidents is still a possibility.
