Church Attendance Essential to America's Greatness

President Donald Trump stepped up to declare houses of worship "essential places that provide essential services" to the American people.

"The governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important, essential places of faith to open right now for this weekend," he said.

The president raised eyebrows by declaring that he will "override" governors if they don't do it.

Where's the president's authority to override governors on this matter?

I'm not a constitutional attorney, but I do have common sense.

The president takes an oath of office during which he swears to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

The First Amendment of our Constitution protects the right to "free exercise" of religion.

Is it complicated during a difficult time like this when governors have a responsibility to manage the health and welfare of the citizens of their state? Of course it is.

But difficult times mean difficulty applying principles, not erasing those principles.

Is it reasonable for President Trump to categorize religious services as "essential"?

I have been writing for weeks that the COVID-19 crisis is highlighting the same conflicts we've been dealing with as a nation all along.

My guess is California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who, as mayor of San Francisco, paved the way for the legalization of same-sex marriage, does not at all believe houses of worship provide essential services.

I don't question that he understands that religious freedom is protected by our Constitution. But I certainly doubt he believes in his heart that church attendance is "essential," and he probably thinks going to the mall or the beach is more essential.

We're dealing with a core conflict in America today. How vitally important is religion?

In the 1830s, French nobleman Alexis de Tocqueville traveled across the still-youthful America to try to understand what was happening and what was driving the remarkable success of the young nation.

He recorded his thoughts in "Democracy in America," which many believe to be the greatest book ever written about our nation.

Here's what he wrote: "I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers ... and it was not there ... in her rich mines and her vast world commerce ... and it was not there ... in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution ... and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and her power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great."

According to a 2018 Gallup survey, 51% of Americans said religion was "very important" in their life. But when Gallup first asked the question, in 1952, 117 years after Tocqueville published his book, 75% said it was "very important."

Although the sense of the importance of religion is still quite strong in America, it has weakened. With that weakening, we're seeing a weakening of behaviors that keep a nation strong: record lows in the rate of marriage and the number of children born.

Also, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll, 45% say that the coronavirus crisis has had a negative impact on their mental health. This could be tied to a weakening of faith.

Leadership is about staking out principles and standing by them. President Trump ran for president to "Make America Great Again." He is exercising leadership by declaring religion and church attendance essential to American greatness.

The president is right to defend the constitutional protection of religious practice and to identify the freedom to worship as essential.

Hopefully, governors will listen.

Here is the deal. The First Amendment says people have freedom of religion. From moonies to Catholics, pick your poison, if it helps you, you are entitled to practice it. That is what makes America great. Attendance is not the issue. The ability to attend is the issue.

Being blessed by God as an individual or as a nation does not mean life devoid of crises or obstacles. Being blessed means having the strength, wisdom, faith and moral compass to endure and navigate through them.

Unfortunately, I think too many of us have in many ways grown too comfortable and surrendered these things.

I agree with both of you.

God has blessed us with certain qualities and we must use them according to His will. Finding out just what that is remains a mystery to me, LOL!

And any country that protects God’s people, Israel and the Jewish people, which we have so far, will be protected by Him.

Through this church-shutdown issue, I’ve only seen ONE person — a pastor — who clearly mentioned the fact that this country EXISTS because people wanted religious freedom. He was on Ingraham last night — Bobby someone, and I think from NJ.

Freedom to worship is why the Pilgrims came here, and that thread ran through the Founding Fathers’ documents and thought processes.

I wake up very early in morning, so Laura Ingraham comes on to late for me, and so does most of Hannity actually. So I turn my TV off. Sometimes I fall asleep with my TV on and then wake up and Hannity is talking.

It’s simple. Many — most? — liberals consider their own moral authority superior to any so-called “God.”

Some are outright atheists, while many others claim to a nebulous form of religion that is quite fuzzy. They may give nodding weak recognition of the “importance” of religion, but they don’t really believe it.

Since their own internal sense of “right-ness” superceeds “God’s,” this justifies ANY act in furtherance of their imperatives. ANY act.

Understand this, and all manner of insanities suddenly become clear.

"Church Attendance Essential to America's Greatness"

This is beyond the comprehension of the godless left.

The worship of God--in fact, God Himself--are irrelevant to the hate filled, evil left.

It also does not want America to be great, believes that America was never great, and considers the USA to be an evil, racist, nazi nation that must be destroyed.

This is what the Trump Revolution is all about: bringing America back from the abyss of decadence, hate, evil, and contempt for truth and into the Light of Truth, of Goodness, and of Faith in God.

Godless nations fall.

Note tagline.

The HATE that characterises the left--the blind, venomous, all consuming hatred for President Trump, is a glaring example of the hatred and evil that have consumed the left.

The Toqueville quote is a great quote and quite rightly sums up America, however, he never wrote anything remotely close to that.

It’s one of those quotes that has been misattributed so often it becomes the truth.

As I recall, it was written by a Presidential speechwriter.

When I learned about this quote, I determined to not pass along quotes unless I could determine the authenticity.

A couple years ago, I saw a great quote by Winston Churchill. While researching it, I sent an email to the Churchill Center and got an immediate response from Sir Winston’s Great Grandson that the quote was bogus.

No, it’s not.

The Freedom to attend church — and the freedom to denounce the stupid churches and religions which ruin it for everyone else.

Religious leaders are fallible and human. Crappy churches and religions deserve to disappear by the terrible reputation they have earned.
