well half would be off duty to come in and relieve. Never know how long it will go. But add the SO and the cop there is some back-up. The sheriff’s deputies are more in the jails than on the street. LA is still a very large area including the county areas where the sheriff has to keep some people home.,

The LASD patrols the unincorporated areas of LA county, and has several “contract cities” where they also patrol.

As you point out, the SO also staffs the county jail.

When a new deputy graduates from the academy, he or she is sent to the custody department for a couple of years before being sent to a patrol station for field training.
