I have been of the belief that until the South could reach an agreement about how to deal with Confederacy-related statues on public property (either choosing to remove of move into museum) or even Confederacy symbols on state flags that the ghosts of the past would remain and tensions would never heal.
Lincoln wanted so badly to oversee a well laid-out reconciliation process between North and South..but alas, he was assassinated before he could implement his vision. Southern Reconstruction ended up being somewhat of a disaster. And the country has yet to recover.
I could not disagree with you more strongly. These symbols stood for 150 years, and are part of an important and instructive chapter in American history. Those whom would ignore or deny history are doomed to repeat it.
