That’s like saying someone wasn’t a true fighter pilot because they only flew a Wildcat over Guadalcanal rather than an F-15. Or that a Point-Du-Hoc ranger on D-Day wasn’t a real ranger because Ranger School opened in 1950 after his time.
World War 2 Army pilots didn't fly fighters. They flew Pursuit planes. But the Navy (and Marine) pilots flew fighters.
