Looters besieged Macy’s iconic Herald Square store in New York City Monday evening as police brought in to enforce an 11 p.m. curfew set by the city’s mayor struggled to control and apprehend an overwhelming crowd that smashed windows and damaged property at the store. Shortly after the curfew began, police were bringing out a third looting suspect, according to a Fox News crew at the scene.

NYC got destroyed last night. Apparently there were 8,000 cops on duty, but the relationship between DeBlasio and NYPD has gotten so toxic, hardly any of them lifted a finger stop the mayhem and looting. And I think DeBlasio has simply given up being mayor. The job is too much for him.

>> 11 p.m. curfew set by the city’s mayor

Earlier reports indicated it was Cuomo’s curfew.

De Blasio was one of many who thought NYC basically runs itself so a mayor can just dabble at the job.

Rudy could have told him otherwise, but he isn't the kind of man to listen.

The police responded to that scene with a sense of urgency you haven’t seen anywhere else in NYC. Between the tough times for retailers In general and the high cost and dysfunction of NYC, I wonder if Macy’s has put the city government on notice that their iconic store on 34th Street is a prime candidate for closure.

Gothamist reported last year that Macy’s was talking about turning the property into a skyscraper office tower, and was in talks with the city about changing the zoning.

And to think when I went to NYC 2 years ago, I thought the city was actually pretty safe because the police presence was so visible.

11 pm is ridiculous for a curfew. A curfew to prevent looting needs to be in a daylight hour And then the streets need to be cleared. Water hoses with permanent dye might help those with a job to go home. Fill buses with curfew breakers and take them somewhere to book them.

Maybe 5 years ago. The city was great under Rudy and Bloomberg, in fact safer than many states, and even safer than London at one point. But that was another time, and the people felt guilty about it, not enough killings and other violence. So they voted in their present mayor to get things back to ‘normal’ for them.

Well Duh ! Of course the curfew did not stop looting and violence. Why should a declaration of a curfew have any effect if the criminals are not terrified of losing their lives ? Why is it that us Normal People have to be the ones afraid ? There is somthing realing f*cked up going on here.
Something is in the air, it stinks, and it ain’t the virus....

It is a prime piece of real estate whose value has been affected by the epidemic and now the riots. Thanks to the lockdowns, Macy’s is having liquidity issues in addition to the pre-lockdown long-term solvency ones related to the rise of discounters like TJX and Ross. TJX’s sales are almost 2x Macy’s; whereas Ross is closing on 1x. Bottom line - the time to sell the Herald Square space may be now.

This wasn’t a shoot-to-kill curfew (i.e. martial law), and cops weren’t arresting people, probably on De Bozo/Big Bird’s orders. No surprise that the curfew was ignored.
