It’s actually pretty easy - if the keys are not kept in a Faraday cage, you can simply use a signal booster to make the cars think the key is much closer than it actually is.

Maybe the keys were not securely locked up inside the dealership?

(And maybe workers’ account passwords were on post-it notes over their desks?)
