After his Los Angeles pizza shop was crippled for two months by the coronavirus pandemic, Bobby Alt reopened Saturday excited to finally dish out slices to customers in person. By the time he closed for the night, he feared the worst for his little business.
A largely peaceful protest earlier in the day, which had delivered a steady flow of hungry customers, had given way to unruly groups of vandals tagging and breaking into businesses in the upscale Beverly Grove neighborhood.
Alt watched it unfold with a sense of dread, closed up DAmores Pizza and left. When he returned the next morning, he found his door busted in and the place trashed.
He is one of thousands of shop owners and restaurateurs who weathered COVID-19 shutdown orders during the virus outbreak only to have reopening dreams dashed by unruly crowds who took advantage of chaos surrounding protests and ransacked businesses across the state over several nights.
From San Diego to Sacramento, vandals sprayed graffiti on storefronts, torched businesses and broke into big box retailers and mom-and-pops alike and ran off with clothing, electronics and other goods.
As the sun was setting, most marchers had moved on. Then a different group came into the neighborhood, he said, and they werent carrying signs or protesting anything.
It seemed like people were excited to rage and riot.
He watched in disbelief as several cars pulled up across the street and a group of about 20 people got out and rampaged through a liquor store. They grabbed bottles of booze and bags of chips. Within 30 seconds, they had cleared the place out.
He returned around dawn to a scene of widespread destruction. Sidewalks were littered with broken glass and smoke was still rising from ashes of stores set ablaze.

I pretty much said that in general and in this instance nothing but wanton destruction.
I don’t believe these criminals have any Party affiliations at all. I doubt more than 5% of them bother to vote and that guess is probably high.
Ny Union Boss of the police who I presume is a Democrat is begging Trump for help
I don't know what's more amazing - their obvious pandering that reeks of fear, the belief that a looter gives a rip and will leave their business alone, or that they've been voting for lawlessness for years and now they're getting it good and hard.
And to add insult to injury her cousin who lives a couple blocks away, said her complex was attacked and they smashed car windows and stole license plates.
What is that old saying "that a conservative was a liberal who has been mugged".
I think she will have different opinions of liberals, after this.
All the pizza joints in my area survived on pickup & delivery. IOW, the normal pizza business model.
Or she’ll stick her fingers in her ears, close her eyes, shout LALALALALALAICAN’THEARYOU over and over and keep voting D. This is sadly the most likely course of action.
It’s the normal model now, but in the 80s and early 90s it wasn’t. There’s still some people that think it’s a viable model (to the point where they don’t offer delivery in their pizza shops and may not even offer carryout) but it was not so slowly dying before COVID-19. With COVID-19? They’re doomed.
Im in Hollywood about a mile from the Bowl.
I just rode through downtown on the motorcycle. That was fun. National Guard surrounds City Hall and the Criminal Courts Bldg. About 200 protesters. A hundred cops, sheriff deputies and Guard. Pretty peaceful now but the Anteefers come out at night
Evidence of that FERAL ARMY we have spent 60 years raising with out tax money....
Ironically, if he had kept his store open, the line of customers likely would have prevented the looting of his business.
