A malaria drug President Donald Trump took to try to prevent COVID-19 proved ineffective for that in the first large, high-quality study to test it in people in close contact with someone with the disease.
Results published Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine show that hydroxychloroquine was no better than placebo pills at preventing illness from the coronavirus. The drug did not seem to cause serious harm, though — about 40% on it had side effects, mostly mild stomach problems.
"We were disappointed. We would have liked for this to work," said the study leader, Dr. David Boulware, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Minnesota. "But our objective was to answer the question and to conduct a high-quality study," because the evidence on the drug so far has been inconclusive, he said.
Hydroxychloroquine and a similar drug, chloroquine, have been the subject of much debate since Trump started promoting them in March. Hydroxychloroquine has long been used for malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, but no large studies have shown it or chloroquine to be safe or effective for much sicker patients with coronavirus, and some studies have suggested the drugs may do harm.
Mr. Trump took a two-week course of hydroxychloroquine, along with zinc and Vitamin D, after two staffers tested positive for COVID-19, and had no ill effects, according to results of his latest physical released by his doctor Wednesday.
Federal regulators have warned against hydroxychloroquine's use except in hospitals and formal studies because of the risk of side effects, especially heart rhythm problems.

This “study” has already been thoroughly debunked (to use a favorite word of the media ) in other threads. It’s as fake as the now discredited Lancet “study”.
Doesn’t matter if the study didn’t use the right combination of elements, they got their five seconds of fame and the desired headline: “Trump Drug Fails.”

New rule: Never ever believe any study that trashes HCQ. It's almost guaranteed to be fake.
In a couple of weeks red flags will appear everywhere.
That fake study in the Lancet just proved it.

It would be nice if HCQ/Zinc/C/D prevented COVID.. but as long as that treatment makes the systems go away faster and/or helps prevent more severe cases, it’s still a “good drug”. There isn’t much that works better.
Also, herd immunity means we need a lot of healthy people getting a mild form.
So why was President Trump taking it?

Did they include the zinc and antibiotic required?
RE: Was it Hydroxychloroquine alone? Was it Hydroxychloroquine with Zinc and Azithromyicin?
This is NOT a study on Hydroxychloroquine as treatment for Covid-19, but to see if it PREVENTS Covid-19. Do you still need Zinc and Azithromyicin for prophylaxis?

If anyone ever wondered about the New England Journal of Medicine, their publication of this should erase any doubt if they have a political agenda or slant to their articles.

Exactly- if this is a ‘high quality study’ as the article claims, then they will list the severity of those on the HCQ who got the virus vs those who took placebo- How many ended in hospital on respirator>? What strain did each side get (I think there are supposed to be a few strains of covid- supposedly on west coast is less severe than east coast strain- some articles were posted in FR awhile back-
Did HCQ lessen the effects? Keep people out of hospital?
