A malaria drug President Donald Trump took to try to prevent COVID-19 proved ineffective for that in the first large, high-quality study to test it in people in close contact with someone with the disease.
Results published Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine show that hydroxychloroquine was no better than placebo pills at preventing illness from the coronavirus. The drug did not seem to cause serious harm, though about 40% on it had side effects, mostly mild stomach problems.
"We were disappointed. We would have liked for this to work," said the study leader, Dr. David Boulware, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Minnesota. "But our objective was to answer the question and to conduct a high-quality study," because the evidence on the drug so far has been inconclusive, he said.
Hydroxychloroquine and a similar drug, chloroquine, have been the subject of much debate since Trump started promoting them in March. Hydroxychloroquine has long been used for malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, but no large studies have shown it or chloroquine to be safe or effective for much sicker patients with coronavirus, and some studies have suggested the drugs may do harm.
Mr. Trump took a two-week course of hydroxychloroquine, along with zinc and Vitamin D, after two staffers tested positive for COVID-19, and had no ill effects, according to results of his latest physical released by his doctor Wednesday.
Federal regulators have warned against hydroxychloroquine's use except in hospitals and formal studies because of the risk of side effects, especially heart rhythm problems.

this was prophylaxis not treatment. It didnt work
Sorry. This is not a miracle drug for covid. I would like it to be but it does not work
All this, btw, makes this a bogus study (also very easily done as a fraud):
“The study enrolled people through the Internet and social media, relying on them to report their own symptoms rather than having them tracked in a formal way by doctors. Participants were not all tested for the coronavirus but were diagnosed as COVID-19 cases based on symptoms in many cases. And not all took their medicines as directed.”
Who knows how many actually took the meds, as they only have those who self-reported not to have (though even they seem to have been included in the results).
when the fake medical “research” community (which is most of them now) want to denigrate a medicine’s results, they use absolute percentages, such a 12% vs 14%, but when they want to promote a medicine’s results, they use relative results, which in this case would be that the NCQ group had 17% better results than the placebo group, which IS significant ...
I read that NEJM used the same faulty data from Surgisphere that Lancet did.
Lancet is already starting to walk that study back.
actually the only results that count are the p value or the number needed to treat. Percentages of any sort are meaningless
By my math, it reduces the chances of contracting COVID-19 by 17%.
According to the CDC, the flu vaccine was 19% effective in 2014-2015.
The only reason for that story is that Trump suggested the drug might help.
Had Covid “symptoms” did they test positive? Were they even tested?
If they can’t kill us, they’re going to try and drive us insane
Take a look at the lead author’s disclosures of conflicts of interest related to funding, which include:
Alliance of Minnesota Chinese Organizations
Minnesota Chinese Chamber of Commerce
I’m sure it’s on the up and up despite the obvious CCP connection. The CCP would never want to pervert science even if it were to Trump’s disadvantage, and no American academic’s research could ever be swayed by either his sources of funding or his political ideology.
Yet another idiotic post from the resident fake doctor on FR
So what's new?
But I'll bite.

There is another thousands more articles from serious publications from all over the world on how fake the anti HCQ study was.
Political reasons would be my guess.
Political reasons would be my guess.
1st question:
Prevent or Cure?
2nd question:
Was the HCQ combined with zinc and the Zpak?
If the ‘scientist’ can’t honestly confirm ‘cure’ and yes to the 2nd question, he can STFU.
President Trump didn’t get the virus.
Good enough for me!
IT’S NOT SUPPOSE TO PREVENT CCP-19, WUHAN, CHINESE VIRUS
It is meant to suppress the symptoms so your body can catch up and you live.
Hydroxychloroquine is not supposed to prevent the Chinese virus.
If you test positive, it’s supposed to prevent you from getting ill to the point where you needs hospitalization.
80 people....staff and patients at a Texas nursing home tested positive....after taking hydroxyl, 79 were cured and did not need hospitalization.
