This POTUS under constant threats and harassment, with growing violent riots, should have a _large_ contingent of US military in or extremely close to DC.

Agreed. I don’t think this happened. They were probably on hot standby in case things really got out of hand, but it seems now that in some cities the riots are simmering down instead of completely out of control as they were last weekend.
