Members of Minneapolis City Council are adding fuel to growing calls for the disbanding of the Minneapolis Police Department in the wake of George Floyd's killing.
There have been rumblings in recent days of looking for alternative approaches to law enforcement and crime prevention in Minneapolis, as trust in the police department continues to plummet after the 46-year-old's death.
Chief among those calling for change is Northside council member Jeremiah Ellison, who on Thursday tweeted "we are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department."
"And when we’re done, we’re not simply gonna glue it back together," he added. "We are going to dramatically rethink how we approach public safety and emergency response. It’s really past due."
Ellison, the 5th Ward council member who is the son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and Minneapolis Public Schools Board Chair Kim Ellison, is not alone in expressing a desire to bring an end to MPD in its current form.
Council president Lisa Bender backed Ellison's call, tweeting: "Yes. We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety."
Earlier on Thursday, she noted how she has "long supported moving money from MPD to community strategies."
Furthermore, she says as the council moves towards transforming law enforcement in the city, she called on the city's white community to stand up.
"If you are a comfortable white person asking to dismantle the police I invite you to reflect: are you willing to stick with it? Will you be calling in three months to ask about garage break-ins? Are you willing to dismantle white supremacy in all systems, including a new system?
"I mean this quite sincerely & seriously: just look at recent conversations about City-funded neighborhood organizations to understand how explicitly we would have to work to establish alternative systems that do not replicate the same problems. White ppl need to show up for this."
The council has proved to be a check on Mayor Jacob Frey's efforts to increase policing in recent years, and the killing of Floyd has seen them become more and more vocal about calls for change.
Ward 3 member Steve Fletcher earlier this week accused MPD of reducing response times to his ward because he had voted for budget cuts for the department.
He said the continued presence of Minneapolis Police Federation President Bob Kroll shows that MPD is "irredeemably beyond reform."
Let them learn their lesson the hard way.

The really sad part is, it may turn to be Trump's fault if he lets this happen.. I don't blieve he will, but he really needs to stand strong against those who trying to keep him from acting.. :(

I have often told the story of this black lady I know who visited her husband’s home in Nigeria.
It was a small city (population, maybe 50,000).
The family home looked like a ramshackle shack, just like all the other homes in town.
However, the family was fairly comfortable. They explained that in their village anything that was of value would be stolen. Therefore they pretended to be poor—kept a very low profile.
Other highlights of the trip—the black lady, her husband and their driver were waylaid and robbed by troops on the side of the road.
When they asked the driver if it was rebels who had robbed them, the driver explained that it was actually government troops.
It turned out that the soldier’s paychecks had never arrived, so they had to pillage strangers to survive.
The black lady said she kissed the ground on her return to America.

One note about Wikipedia, it is generally garbage because of the leftist that edit it. Conservatives do not have a say and their contributions are not included unless it fits progressive ideology. Every Wikipedia page has a "Talk" tab and you can see revisions to articles. You can see what is proposed, left out, deleted, and revised in articles. There's a lot of facts that get changed, such as Keith Ellison's domestic abuse. He's a wife beater, like most good Muslims.
My assumption about Jeremiah is that a Muslim father will not allow his children to be raised as a non-Muslim. That assumption is correct. Here's a leftist article on Kim Ellison, Keith's abused ex-wife. It states that Kim and Keith's four children were raised as Muslims. You should also know that Keith Ellison former US House seat is currently filled by Ilhan Omar, another Muslim.
I don't buy into the religion of peace PC crap and I don't buy into conspiracy theories. I simply view that Islam is antithetical to Western Culture and as a Christian I believe it is evil. Those that hold the beliefs of a death cult are not going to make decisions or act in a way that we consider rational, such as dismantling police departments. Understand that these people sincerely hold their beliefs and are more than willing to die for them. They have greater convictions than the majority of Americans, as evidence in the failed war on terror which should have been a successful war on Islam. We have been fighting these bastards since our nation's founding. It's time to end it or they will end us.
