Members of Minneapolis City Council are adding fuel to growing calls for the disbanding of the Minneapolis Police Department in the wake of George Floyd's killing.
There have been rumblings in recent days of looking for alternative approaches to law enforcement and crime prevention in Minneapolis, as trust in the police department continues to plummet after the 46-year-old's death.
Chief among those calling for change is Northside council member Jeremiah Ellison, who on Thursday tweeted "we are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department."
"And when we’re done, we’re not simply gonna glue it back together," he added. "We are going to dramatically rethink how we approach public safety and emergency response. It’s really past due."
Ellison, the 5th Ward council member who is the son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and Minneapolis Public Schools Board Chair Kim Ellison, is not alone in expressing a desire to bring an end to MPD in its current form.
Council president Lisa Bender backed Ellison's call, tweeting: "Yes. We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety."
Earlier on Thursday, she noted how she has "long supported moving money from MPD to community strategies."
Furthermore, she says as the council moves towards transforming law enforcement in the city, she called on the city's white community to stand up.
"If you are a comfortable white person asking to dismantle the police I invite you to reflect: are you willing to stick with it? Will you be calling in three months to ask about garage break-ins? Are you willing to dismantle white supremacy in all systems, including a new system?
"I mean this quite sincerely & seriously: just look at recent conversations about City-funded neighborhood organizations to understand how explicitly we would have to work to establish alternative systems that do not replicate the same problems. White ppl need to show up for this."
The council has proved to be a check on Mayor Jacob Frey's efforts to increase policing in recent years, and the killing of Floyd has seen them become more and more vocal about calls for change.
Ward 3 member Steve Fletcher earlier this week accused MPD of reducing response times to his ward because he had voted for budget cuts for the department.
He said the continued presence of Minneapolis Police Federation President Bob Kroll shows that MPD is "irredeemably beyond reform."

Except they’ll blame Trump, claim crime skyrocketed because he wouldn’t send financial assistance or some crap like that and the media will refuse to print a rebuttal.
Look at this crap now: Democrat Senators kneeling for George Floyd. How many of them have knelt for that cop shot in the head the other day? How many of them have ever knelt for a cop killed in the line of duty?

Of course Jim. The question is where do we stop them from moving to suburbs once there is nothing left to loot or burn in the cities? We can't build militias without the Fed and Local governments knowing in this era. How do we communicate to like minded people without giving protocol/plans away? Landlines, cell phones, internet, ham radio are not viable any longer. Encrypted programs, maybe? But than they can be hacked. Word of mouth takes too long, unless already organized by Neighborhood Watches.
This has been my concern for some years. We are reaching the point of defending ourselves, but without comms, we are on our own. I have used encrypted ProtonMail.com for a few years, but the recipient also needs to be a subscriber. There must be some kind of secure comms. Encrypted satellite?

Funding. Police department. The Mayor has complete power over the establishment, maintenance, and command of the police department. The Mayor may make all rules and regulations and may promulgate and enforce general and special orders necessary to operating the police department. Except where the law vests an appointment in the department itself, the Mayor appoints and may discipline or discharge any employee in the department (subject to the Civil Service Commission’s rules, in the case of an employee in the classified service).

I’ve been saying this since that happened. Some leftist organization must have bribed the entire police Department to go full out on the next minority they arrest. Which wasn’t a problem for Chauvin as I heard Floyd fired him from his side gig rent a cop job.

As much as like what SpaceX is doing, it is closely aligned with NASA which is monitored by various Intell agencies, including their own. NASA has had a contract with SpaceX for a few years to launch American satellites. Any entity that is in bed with Fedgov can't be trusted. You think Musk would allow his ambitions to be short-circuited for Patriots wanting encrypted comms supporting even legal militias? Off shore encrypted comms like ProtonMail.com are probably the best for now. Unfortunately, you have to be a register recipient on the receiving side to decode.
There has got to be way to communicate and organize without the NSA hacking encrypted conversations. If not, then all we have is word of mouth and individual cells to protect our neighborhoods and our Republic. Too slow and who knows what crazies like McVeigh would infiltrate, not to mention various LE agencies.
I don't have the answer for secure comms. Maybe Travis McGee has some ideas. If this stupid riot crap grows with the Antifa/commies support to move on our peaceful suburbs, we need a plan. Neighborhood Watches are useless when the SHTF. If this weekend million DC protest turns out peacefully, then maybe this all moot. I doubt it.
