White House turns press corps into anti-social distancing props
Cnn.com ^ | Betsy Klein and Bryan Stelter

Members of the White House press corps became the latest political prop in President Donald Trump's quest to reopen the country on Friday.

The White House Correspondents Association said the administration's conduct "violated the federal government's guidelines on social distancing and needlessly put reporters' health at risk." The White House set up press seats for a Friday event in the Rose Garden, which was billed as a news conference, though Trump ended up taking no questions from reporters. The folding chairs were originally placed six feet apart, just like they have been since April, in accordance with social distancing guidelines.

I see the influence of his outstanding new press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. PDJT had nothing to gain by taking questions on extraneous subjects. The press was there for news about the economy.

And no reporter took responsibility for their own health and moved the chair to a "safe" distance? What are they? Thoughtless lemmings?

Oh yeah, they're reporters.

Is anybody going to be shocked by this. We’ve all pretty much known for years.

When they act like children and disrespect what is going on, they get treated like children. As others have said, they could have left, OR they could have stood up during the event and kept themselves at what they considered a safe distance. But no, they don’t have the brain power to figure that out.

I was watching the entire Trump speech and enjoyed every minute of him telling the press how ‘tremendous this and tremendous that’ were things in the USA because of the current leadership.

What disappointed me is not being able to see the steam rising from the heads of the media as they were forced to endure 50 minutes of talking points that were completely antithetical to their way of thinking.

None of the Republican presenters are wearing a mask. Contrast that with Dem pols who seem to wear them so everyone can identify them as a Democrat. I get a kick out of old man Biden
stuck wearing his mask when he really doesn’t want to like a bucking bronco wanting to throw off his saddle. Too bad, Joe.

He’s trolling them again.

Since the riots have shown that the social distancing thing is over and done, no reason the reporters can’t sit closer together OUTSIDE!!!

I’ve tried in previous comments to draw attention to the connections between the the climate, covid lockdown and riot mobs, all backed by FakeNewsMSM, in Europe, Australia and US. here’s more:

5 Jun: Climate Depot: Climate activists at Sunrise Movement: ‘The fight against climate change exists alongside the fight against white supremacy and colonialism’
Fighting White supremacy & defunding the police - the new climate fix
by Marc Morano
Sunrise Movement, the group behind the Green New Deal: “As a movement for climate justice, we know that it is necessary to dismantle the underlying systems of extraction, segregation, and racist inequality that have allowed for the exploitation of people and the environment they live in. We cannot achieve climate justice without moving away from police and prisons.”

“Without racial healing and reparations, there cannot be climate justice.”
“For us people of color, the fight against climate change exists alongside the fight against white supremacy and colonialism.”

5 Jun: Climate Depot: Flashback: Fmr. UN climate head predicted COVID lockdowns?!: ‘The only way a 2015 agreement can achieve a 2-degree goal is to shut down the whole global economy’
by Marc Morano
“The only way that a 2015 agreement can achieve a 2-degree goal is to shut down the whole global economy,” Yvo de Boer, former UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) executive secretary said in 2013.
Yvo de Boer’s words sound prophetic when compared to the comments of climate campaigners in 2020 excited about the impact of the COVID lockdowns.

Climate activist Eric Holthaus said on April 22, 2020, about the impact of lockdowns on global CO2 emissions: “This is roughly the same pace that the IPCC says we need to sustain every year until 2030 to be on pace to limit global warming to 1.5C and hit the Paris climate goals. This is what ‘rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society’ looks like.”..

But the reality is that even with lockdowns and shutdown of most aspects of society, global CO2 emissions didn’t seem to notice yet...

4 Jun: Politico: Green groups pivot to back protests against police: ‘People see those deep connections’
By ZACK COLMAN, GAVIN BADE and BEN LEFEBVRE
The environmental movement has drawn millions of activists to marches calling for action on climate change or to stop pipeline projects, and many of the largest green groups, including the Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council and Environmental Defense Fund have issued statements supporting the protests that have erupted in dozens of cities and towns this week...

“Seeing massive health inequalities in the black community — that’s the same mass death we want to fight against with climate change, and we should be showing up for black lives,” said Mattias Lehman, the digital director for Sunrise Movement who got his start in the Black Lives Matter movement...

For large environmental organizations seeking to pivot from their efforts to draw attention to the heightened Covid-19 risks facing people exposed to pollution, addressing the unrest from the death of Floyd and others before him underscored the challenges facing the green movement as it broadens its focus...

But the national groups have in recent years prioritized efforts to address the health concerns facing minority communities that are most vulnerable to climate change and the pollution generated by fossil fuels...

For the newer groups of young activists that since late 2018 have led the push for the Green New Deal, seeking a sweeping overhaul of the U.S. economy to fight climate change, issues such as racial equality are seen as a core part of the mission. Organizations like the Sunrise Movement and Extinction Rebellion have led that push, attracting activists from a wider set of backgrounds than the largely white legions of people who drove the environmental movement in the past...

“I do think this could be a turning point for the environmental movement. But the question is whether they are taking the moment now to stop and do nothing but uplift black lives,” said Lauren Wiggins, an online content strategist at Greenpeace, who attended protests last Friday in Oakland, Calif.

Many of the most powerful green groups in Washington, D.C., are still assessing what kind of role they can play beyond issuing statements supporting the protesters and giving staff time to attend protests. The NRDC is “exploring ways for staff to increase all kinds of civic engagement activities,” spokesperson Jenny Powers said in an email...

“When I started the job at NPCA (National Parks Conservation Association) I came in knowing it was a predominantly white organization with white privilege,” said Martínez, the NPCA’s resource protection manager, who was among the dozens of protesters who took shelter overnight Monday in a Washington, D.C., home as police threatened them with arrest...

The larger groups may have been caught flat-footed by the escalating protests while they have been focused on adapting their strategies to deal with restructuring their messages in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak, Taylor added...

Still, the response has been frustrating to people like environmental justice activist Anthony Rogers-Wright, who joined protests in Minneapolis where Floyd was killed — and where National Guard officers ordered him and his friends to lay face down on the sidewalk, hands behind their heads, as they tried to march to a mural of Floyd after curfew Sunday...

The Sierra Club has sent emails to its volunteers and members amplifying messages of black activists and organizations, including calls to donate to such causes. Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace are working to expand their roles as conveners between environmental and social justice organizations.
Still, environmental activists who have participated in protests this week said they have seen a big difference in how law enforcement agencies have treated people calling out police violence than people who have taken the streets for climate change action...

3 Jun: Inside Climate News: As Protests Rage Over George Floyd’s Death, Climate Activists Embrace Racial Justice
Friends of the Earth tweeted #BlackLivesMatter, and the head of the NRDC promised “to be fully and visibly committed to the fight against systemic racism.”
By ILANA COHEN, EVELYN NIEVES, JUDY FAHYS, MARIANNE LAVELLE, JAMES BRUGGERS
Bronx Climate Justice North, another grassroots group, says on its website: “Without a focus on correcting injustice, work on climate change addresses only symptoms, and not root causes.”...

These community organizations in New York have been joined in protest by the nation’s most prominent climate change activist groups, including the Sierra Club, 350.org, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Sunrise Movement and Extinction Rebellion...

Racial and ethnic minorities, (Rev. Dawn Cooley, who is executive director of Louisville-based Kentucky Interfaith Power & Light, a coalition of faith communities that advocates for action on climate change) noted, are bearing a disproportionate burden of illness and death from the novel coronavirus pandemic...

18 Apr: NationOfChange.org: For climate activists, coronavirus lockdown means more time to organize
“This pandemic is a preview of what could happen to our world if we don’t adequately address the climate crisis. Only it’s going to be tenfold worse.”
By Nick Engelfried
“We’ve actually seen increased attendance on our calls since the COVID-19 stay-at-home order,” said high school senior Hridesh Singh of New York Youth Climate Leaders, an organization of middle school, high school and college students pushing for state-level climate action...

Climategroups are even implementing their own, alternative online schooling programs. In late March, Sunrise Movement introduced Sunrise School, which the organization describes as “an online training program designed to develop thousands of young leaders and introduce them to thefight for a Green New Deal.” By helping students connect with each other remotely, learn about how the climate crisis overlaps with systemsof oppression, and develop grassroots organizing skills, Sunrise Schoolaims to ensure young climate activists are ready to fight harder than ever after the threat of COVID-19 lifts...
