David Petraeus: Remove Names of Confederate ‘Traitors’ from Army Bases

Retired U.S. Army General and former CIA Director David Petraeus on Tuesday wrote in an op-ed for The Atlantic that “It is time to remove the names of traitors like Benning and Bragg from our country’s most important military installation,” a reference to bases named after Gen. Henry Benning in Columbus, Georgia, and Gen. Braxton Bragg in Cumberland County, North Carolina.

It gives me considerable pause, for example, to note that my alma mater, West Point, honors Robert E. Lee with a gate, a road, an entire housing area, and a barracks, the last of which was built during the 1960s. A portrait of Lee with an enslaved person adorns a wall of the cadet library, the counterpoint to a portrait of Grant, his Civil War nemesis, on a nearby wall.

[…] We do not live in a country to which Braxton Bragg, Henry L. Benning, or Robert E. Lee can serve as an inspiration. Acknowledging this fact is imperative. Should it fail to do so, the Army, which prides itself on leading the way in perilous times, will be left to fight a rearguard action against a more inclusive American future, one that fulfills the nation’s founding promise.

Last Thursday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) announced a statue of Robert E. Lee will be removed “as soon as possible” from Richmond’s Monument Avenue.

The statue, which sits on state property, will move to storage while Northam’s administration works “with the community to determine its future,” the governor said at a news conference where the announcement was met with extended applause.

We should also remove four star generals who can’t keep their zipper closed when away from the house.

If Betrayus was a general back then, they would be tearing his statue down now.

Now so much for this.   It only stood for more than 150 years.

NO!

Lets cut to the chase and F people up who riot and capture
police stations.

I’ll volunteer to join the military clear the areas out.

The next time an organized group tries this, there will be
mass executions for treason.

Then the good citizens can live in peace again.

WE DON’T SURRENDER ONE SQUARE INCH.

And if states Governor’s complain, we remove them and try
them for treason.

We are a nation of laws, and this S stops right here.

We tried that in 1861. Didn’t work.

Well, on the bright side, I have heard the two lawsuits have been filed against the removal of the Robert E Lee statue in Richmond, that some of the argument Is that the statue cannot be removed, legalLy, according to its original charter (Much like the confederate relief on Stone Mountain in Atlanta, which is protected by law). I have also heard that the Richmond historic society has gotten involved, which essentially means a bunch of angry blue haired women with pitchforks. You don’t want to mess with them.

Arlington was built by Lee’s father in law GW Parke Custis. Lee and his wife inherited Arlington upon Custis’ death in 1857.

Lee’s father in law was the grandson of Martha Washington and the adopted son of George. George and Martha Washington adopted Parke and his sister after the death of Martha’s son John Parke Custis during the Revolution.

They will have to remove all traces of President John Tyler as well. Tyler was elected to the Confederate Congress.

Probably for the same reason that you sanitize the history of the Founders being traitors to their government when they rebelled.

And apparently your condemnation of slave owners convniently ignores George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and the majority of early Presidents.

Or do you condemn them as well?

The Confederacy did that in 1861. Didn’t work out well for all involved. Most especially the Confederacy.

“Washington owned slaves at one time.”

Washington owned slaves his entire life. His slaves were freed upon his death, Martha’s were not.

Martha’s slaves went to her children, one of which was GW Parke Custis, Robert E Lee’s father in law.

Lee and his wife inherited the slaves upon Custis’ death in 1857, with the stipulation that they all be freed 5 years after Custis’ death, and they were.

Tye weren’t defending their states. They were fighting to preserve an economic system based on the use of slave labor.
And all of this bs aside about ‘’states rights’’ and “War

For Southern Independence’’ the fact of the matter is the South chose violent secession and instigated the costliest and bloodiest war in American history and they LOST!!. Get over it.
