David Petraeus: Remove Names of Confederate ‘Traitors’ from Army Bases

Retired U.S. Army General and former CIA Director David Petraeus on Tuesday wrote in an op-ed for The Atlantic that “It is time to remove the names of traitors like Benning and Bragg from our country’s most important military installation,” a reference to bases named after Gen. Henry Benning in Columbus, Georgia, and Gen. Braxton Bragg in Cumberland County, North Carolina.

It gives me considerable pause, for example, to note that my alma mater, West Point, honors Robert E. Lee with a gate, a road, an entire housing area, and a barracks, the last of which was built during the 1960s. A portrait of Lee with an enslaved person adorns a wall of the cadet library, the counterpoint to a portrait of Grant, his Civil War nemesis, on a nearby wall.

[…] We do not live in a country to which Braxton Bragg, Henry L. Benning, or Robert E. Lee can serve as an inspiration. Acknowledging this fact is imperative. Should it fail to do so, the Army, which prides itself on leading the way in perilous times, will be left to fight a rearguard action against a more inclusive American future, one that fulfills the nation’s founding promise.

Last Thursday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) announced a statue of Robert E. Lee will be removed “as soon as possible” from Richmond’s Monument Avenue.

The statue, which sits on state property, will move to storage while Northam’s administration works “with the community to determine its future,” the governor said at a news conference where the announcement was met with extended applause.

In which case it will be a true civil war not a war between two regularly organized states. It will be fought out at the community level in many places as well as use of counter insurgent operations by the government against much of the citizenry. I never thought when I made a close study of counter insurgency back in the 60’s I was studying a chapter in the future history of the US.

“It gives me considerable pause, for example, to note that my alma mater, West Point, honors Robert E. Lee.”

Petraeus is a military man and doesn’t know who Robert E. Lee is?

lets disappear Arlington Cemetery

They disappeared the crosses from the head stones years ago and not a single whimper from patriots or churches.

Funny how the same people that Conservative Americans supported when they were vilified by the Left are now turning against those same Conservative Americans.

Perhaps it’s a Virus.

What about the items named for Indian tribes and chiefs?

And the civilized Tribes had slaves too.

Petraeus knows who R E Lee is for certain. His presence makes him nervous, sort of the ghost at the feast.

Hey you are right.

The civil war wasn’t a textbook definition civil war.

The south seceded so it was kind of a separate country at that point.

Civil wars usually bring to mind fighting for control of one country.

I wish the south had won and I live in NYC

A good many New Yorkers felt that way about the late unpleasantness. A lineal descendant of the original owner of Gracie Mansion left NY and became a BG in the Confederate Army, and was killed in combat.

Whoa...

It’s as though there’s been a massive kind of brainwashing across the nation. In a two week period a great many relatively sane people in all walks of life have lost their minds. There is no easy answer to this, in my mind. There are the quick, snap one liners the internet breeds- but they don’t get to the bottom of it. Something awful is unfolding before us.

That’s not to say I ever thought highly of Petraeus or don’t believe race is a challenge in America, but it’s this sudden tsunami of mob rule, of fear-driven statements from public figures. It’s as if we are trying to erase our history- good and bad.

I can’t express it well- but I know it’s wrong and it won’t offer true healing. I “pray without ceasing”...

Wow.

Well many from NY didn’t want to go fight.

Especially the Irish who just got off the boat and were sent to die.

But if you had 300 bucks you could buy your way out, I think

I’m also from the south shore side of Staten Island, which is probably the most conservative area in the 5 boroughs.

At the time, it wasn’t established that succession was not allowed. There was no precedent to draw upon.

Uh, you mean other than the separation from the United Kingdom which was a Union? We formed a Confederacy? We were a bunch of slave owning states? Had our armies led by a slave owning general from Virginia? Union forces (the British) offered freedom to the slaves if they would serve in the Union Army?

Any of that ringing a bell? Seems like a pretty good precedent for the idea that states can leave a Union, form a confederacy, and govern their own affairs.

The Declaration of Independence (our founding document) says that it is the right of all people to "dissolve the political bonds". It says this right is given by God.

So I disagree that there wasn't Precedent, and I disagree that the answer as to whether or not states had the right to do this hadn't yet been established. Yes, it was established in 1776.

Every time a current or former General opens his mouth it makes it feel like ANTIFA is the military arm of the Pentagon.

What’s with all these people living in the past like all the events of the past are going on today in 2020? I just don’t get it.
