My father was too young for WWII, and he was from NE PA.
He remembered La Guardia reading the Sunday comics over the radio during some newspaper delivery strike.
I just recently discovered that La Guardia was Jewish, although he played it down. But he was indeed one of the loudest voices against Hitler, even before the war.
