A newly-unearthed clip of Joe Biden shows the then-senator referring to members of a female Confederacy group as fine people during a 1993 Senate hearing.
During the Senate confirmation hearing for then-nominee to the Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Biden, the sitting Senate Judiciary Chairman, made a surprising comment about the United Daughters of the Confederacy, an organization committed to preserving Confederate statues with ties to the Ku Klux Klan.

I wish we kept their statues up.

“There are were very fine people on both sides of the Civil War.”
This was 1993.
Unfortunately, this will be yet another nonstory.
Conservatives are held responsible for everything they did, or even might have done. Woe to the conservative who drew a picture of General Lee while in kindergarten!
But liberals evolve. Sen. Robert Byrd was once not just Klansman, but a Klan leader. No problem. He evolved. Hillary Clinton was once firmly against gay marriage. No problem. She evolved.
Biden will get the same sort of pass.
It shouldn’t have been a wish. Should have been stopped by 10s of thousands of protesters protecting the statues.
i never in my wildest dreams though confederate statues would come down so easily.
It saddened me beyond words, both them being taken down and the ease with which it was done.
It can make for a good comercial or a quick debate point should Biden try to bring the fine people point up.
This thread is useless without pictures.
Can’t assess fineness without pictures.
I agree with you on the statues.
bttt
speaking as the descendant of people on both sides i can’t stand fighting the Civil War all over again. i do hope the Confederate museums will rescue the statues - and i think Yankees better look out for theirs too as Lincoln statues are getting tagged and scheduled for toppling. disgraceful. reminds me of the Taliban desecrating those wonderful centuries old iconic statues.

The war between the states had Americans on both sides. It is right to commemorate them.
If Joe Biden watched “Gone With the Wind” in 1993, that is not a scandal.
Joe Biden may be an enemy of black Americans, but that has nothing to do with saying the “United Daughters of the Confederacy” is made of “fine people.”
But, it’s Joe! He can say what he wants. He’s a Democrat.
Oh, were there some under age young ladies there?
They better use this in a commercial and run it a million times a day. We have a war on our hands and trump and campaign need to go nuclear every minute.
exactly!
They want to get rid of all statues and monuments of non-communists.
It’s not only confederates. But that’s how they start.
So this is his good people on both sides comment, I’m sure the media will come down hard on him.
Perhaps. They did not have access to the fragrant shampoos available today, but Joe would have gladly sniffed them. ;-)
