Police recover guns, knives and ammunition following violent clash over Oñate statue (ABQ NM protest shooting)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Albuquerque police recovered guns, knives and ammunition following a protest that turned violent Monday Night.

A man was arrested for shooting a person near Old Town after protesters attempted to tear down a statue of Juan de Oñate.

“This kind of violence has no place in our city. Our hearts go out to the victim and his family. Last night, this sculpture became more than a symbol, it became a matter of public safety, and today we removed it from its place in front of the Albuquerque Museum until the appropriate civic institutions can determine next steps," said Mayor Tim Keller during a meeting with top city officials.

During a briefing with top city officials, it was announced that New Mexico State Police would take over the investigation.

APD said they handed it over to ensure fairness. All of APD's techniques for crowd control, response and staging of officers is also under review by the Public Oversight Board.

"Officers have to balance the need to step in when they think a crime is committed and sometimes that's not so clear," said APD spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos. "It might be that a crime might be committed, or they aren't sure at that point. They have to balance that and the fact that just the presence of a uniformed officer may escalate tensions and lead to violence."

Police said smoke was uses to disperse the crowd, and get access to the victim.

Keller said “it appears the perpetrator was agitating at the protest well before the shooting, and multiple witnesses have come forward to report that he violently threw a woman to the ground before the fighting broke out."

Dem Mayor says the shooter started the incident by vilently pushing a woman to the grounf. Video seen so far shows shoving and pushing but no such incident as described. Mayor is a far-left lib who will side with the protestors. That isn't surprising since Antifa and leftist mobs are now a part of the Democratic party. Mr. Baca was being assaulted by a female protestor using the common Antifa tactic of blocking someone aggressively but pretending to be innocent. Mr. Baca removes the person pushing against him.

Subsequently, after trying to leave the mob and escape Mr. Baca is attacked by 3 individuals, one of whom attempts to or hits him with a skateboard for a second time. That individual is also seen in images holding what appear to be weapons.

Here is the video of the moment where the female assaults Mr. Baca and he responds. That kind of interaction is a classic Antifa technique.

There is no evidence whatsoever linking the militia group and the shooter. Don’t get me wrong, he was well within his rights to defend himself there. It’s just that some people are trying to make a link when there isn’t one.

People have been attacking that statue for a long time. Usually cutting a leg off of it as I heard the story from a friend in ABQ.

Juan de Oñate

Today Oñate is known for the 1599 Acoma Massacre. Following a dispute that led to the death of thirteen Spaniards at the hands of the Ácoma, including Oñate's nephew, Juan de Zaldívar, Oñate ordered a brutal retaliation against Acoma Pueblo. The Pueblo was destroyed.[2] Around 800–1000 Ácoma were killed.[3]

Of the 500 or so survivors, at a trial at Ohkay Owingeh, Oñate sentenced most to twenty years of forced "personal servitude" and additionally mandated that all men over the age of twenty-five have a foot cut off.[3] He was eventually banished from New Mexico and exiled from Mexico City for five years, convicted by the Spanish government of using "excessive force" against the Acoma people.[2]
