Trump Looking to Replace $600 Unemployment Benefit With Back-to-Work Bonus

Donald Trump is looking to replace the $600 a week Pandemic Unemployment Benefit with a back-to-work bonus that will incentivize working for many of the 30 million people currently receiving the enhanced benefit. The benefit is set to expire July 31 and Democrats want to expand it into next year.

A study done by the Federal Reserve found that the federal unemployment benefit was making it difficult for companies to hire workers as the economy reopens following the lockdown.

Barrons:

Even though the unemployment rate is expected to register over 20% for May in the jobs report the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release June 5, employers reported difficulty in hiring during the severe economic contraction resulting from the coronavirus shutdown.

“Contacts cited challenges in bringing employees back to work, including workers’ health concerns, limited access to childcare, and generous unemployment insurance benefits,” the Beige Book summary said.

That $600 a week is on top of state unemployment benefits that some states have also expanded. The bottom line is, workers are asking themselves why go back when I’m making more money sitting at home?

In particular, the various Fed districts noted the impact of expanded unemployment benefits, including the extra $600 a week under the Cares Act.

“Some businesses have already made efforts to recall laid off workers, as well as hire new workers. A number of these firms noted that this has been challenging, with many unemployed workers reluctant to return to work—some attributed this to generous unemployment benefits, as well as safety concerns,” according to the New York Fed.

You get what you incentivize. That's why communism fails every time it's tried: there are no inventives so you get nothing out of people, just the bare minimum.

Incentivizing finding work instead of incentivizing staying unemployed is a very good idea.

Doesn’t this $600.00 thing, run out in July?

If so let it die...no bonus...let them get fired if they refuse to return to work...time to stop handing out FREE STUFF...liberals will never be satisfied. ...

Why didn’t he leave it up to the states? I thought they shut things down.

The $600/week bonus should have been to those essential workers that still had to go out everyday and expose themselves to the virus. It should have been a combat pay style bonus.

Some essential workers did and are still getting hazard pay. I imagine most of those unemployed people would have loved to be an "essential" worker during the shutdown instead of losing their job.

I’m conservative as they get.

I repeat. Where are the f’ing jobs? Thousands of resumes sent out, only to be blocked by Indian screeners or Indian interview panels. Only real interviews I received were from companies in the UK, Germany or Canada.

My job there is no call back, perhaps in March 2021 (see the MLB thread to see why), and no other jobs in my field due to extreme Indian racism.

Trump has done nothing yet to remove this scum from the US, as both Democrats and Republicans put Indians jobs first before Americans.

We are still suffering. Our entire industry has been levelled. No—not professional sports, buy the fairs and festival industry. We will not be able to work until maybe next year. the $600/wk plus $167 from the state is something—but barely covers anything that we would make normally. Starvation wages practically-—and we get just two more weeks of the $600 bucks, because it was only for 16 weeks.

The $167/wk ends December 1st. I still have four months to live until we can drive a 700 miles and hope our first event in Henderson, NV will open. Fuel costs themselves will be around a grand just for two vehicles.

Yeah—like this money is keeping me from going to work?

The fact that the unemployed are choosing to stay home and collect benefits proves that your point is incorrect.

Which this is bullcrap? Cutting the $600 bucks, or giving people a bonus to go off relief?

Probably both. Certainly so if someone ended up taking more money then they were making employed.

I don’t think it’s even the short-term top off that is making the greatest difference, as that’s only got 5 more weeks to go anyway. What it is is that anyone who took unemployment now can’t apply for it again until they have built up another few quarters of work credit. If they leave the certainty of 39-weeks minimal payments, with a good chance of that getting extended, they might go back to work for a few weeks, then get laid off again and be SOOL.

We simply can’t have a country where our marginal workers get bounced around like that. They’ll buy the globalist koolaid and help to tear it down.

Our Nephew worked part time doing Dog Training. He got laid off because of the Kung Flu.

He applied for Unemployment in CA. He started getting his “normal” Unemployment Benefit which wasn’t much.

One day he opens is Mailbox and inside is a Visa Debit Card with a $2,400 Balance. This kid couldn’t put $400 in the Bank if he tried. Now he’s flush with Cash thanks to Uncle Sugar.

Sorry folks, the America we knew where hard work, thrift and Patriotism was the norm is gone forever, Add Law and Order to the List while you’re at it. Now we have a Lawbreaker Class to deal with.

I hope something will be renewed, as folks in our industry are dying out here.

Yeah—delivery job? In a rural area with large vehicles? You know 7 miles to the gallon. Oh—just buy a beater car with better mileage? Beater cars start at ten to twelve grand around here...So I am going to spend ten grand to make an extra 500 a month making deliveriers?

Back to work bonus is a good carrot, but they’ll have to continue a lesser enhancement. 300 or so. There’s just not going to be that many jobs for a while.

Bullshit Moe. You just want a bonus for NOT GOING BACK TO WORK.

There are jobs all over the place, Home Depot, Truck Drivers, Walmart, Software companies, every fast food joint that can't get their "Moe Howard's" ass off of the couch.

If you don't have any jobs in your area, move, hitch hike out of "where there are not that many jobs".

NO matter where I drive in Western PA, there are help wanted signs and PA is not any where like the Southern states in terms of growth.

If you can't find a job, you don't want to work and you loved that $600 a week bonus to lay around and eat and drink.

That $600.00 expires in July so there is NO NEED to give back to work bonuses!! After July they will get their regular unemployment which isn’t much so everyone will be looking for work they would be smart to go back NOW instead of when millions are looking all at the same time!!

The $600 add-on ends July 25th.

The "Back to work" bonus is not a good idea. It would be labor intensive for staff to verify and pay it. It would require states to reprogram their computers again. Some states still aren't able to pay the PUA benefits to the self employed.

I used to work at an unemployment office decades ago. It was amazing how many claimants would report a return to work starting the week after their benefits ran out.

Do something else beside moaning about your industry, the carny con.

Get a lawn mover and compete with illegals.

There are jobs, go and get one, and yes, the $600 a week is keeping you from going to work.

If all you got was $167 a week from your state, I guarantee you that you'd be out humping the streets for a job.

Right now, you are just bitching because your industry isn't something that is required, but while you are moaning, you are still taking the $600/week.

You should be a small kahuna and go and get a damn job, quit your whining.

Maybe I’m retired and not getting anything.
But am aware of those waiting to see if they have jobs to go back to.
Maybe I’m disabled and can’t work.
But am aware of those waiting to see if they have jobs to go back to.
Maybe I own a business and can’t bring everyone back yet.
But am aware of those waiting to see if they have jobs to go back to.

But don’t let these possibilities are dozens of others keep you from your ignorant rant.

Don't worry Moe, I won't.

Is it ignorant if you don't like it because it hits close to home?

I really don't care what your circumstance is, but if you are defending the $600 a week and now are advocating for and additional $300 a week not to work, go over to the DU where the communists hang out.

If you own a business and can't re-hire every one, that's life.

In the 80s when Reagan changed the tax laws, and I owned many rental properties and lost millions, no one offered taxpayer refunds or bailouts.

Every one cheered and said, good, those bastards have been screwing us for years.

Moe, life is tough, but paying people not to work is the fastest way to destroy America.

Want proof, look at the inner cities and the section 8 housing and welfare for bastards programs for proof.

Spare me your bleeding heart, this is Free Republic, not Free Cash for non-workers.

How's that for an ignorant rant???
