Former Atlanta officer facing Rayshard Brooks murder charge gets $250,000 legal-fee boost

A nonprofit organization says it has now raised $250,000 for former Atlanta officer Garrett Rolfe’s legal fees as he faces a felony murder charge in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks.

The announcement from the Georgia Law Enforcement Organization on Thursday comes as the Atlanta Police Foundation – another support group for officers – revealed to WSB-TV that it will be paying a $500 bonus to each of the city’s cops. Atlanta’s police department had said Wednesday that a “higher than usual” number of officers called out of work after prosecutors announced charges in connection to Brooks’ June 12 death.

“I just got off the phone with Garrett and he is speechless at the amount of support you all are showing him!” Greg James, the Georgia Law Enforcement Organization’s founder, wrote in a Facebook post. “The fundraiser is currently sitting at $250,000 for his legal fees, so from all of us at Georgia Law Enforcement Organization and Officer Garrett Rolfe, THANK YOU for helping to restore faith in humanity in these very trying times that we’re living in!”

Will this end up being the most incredible miscarriage of justice in decades? What if he gets the wrong jury? But how did this even get past a grand jury? I’m confused

It’s like the Duke lacrosse prosecution, except we have video showing the truth.

I live in atlanta, and I hope the cops all call in sick for a week... or refuse to take calls other than murder.

where did grand juries go? I was a foreman on a major grand jury case on Staten island that I was told I could not talk about ever. Not ever..

I am embarrassed about my lack of knowledge of our judicial system. I thought things like this went to a grand jury all the time

I don’t think the DA even had time to get it in front of the Grand Jury before making his announcement. The attitude there seems to be “we’ll do as we like” and you can go jump in the lake.

I applaud the organization for helping with the officer’s legal fees. They will be considerable, no doubt. I try to imagine his predicament and what must be going through his mind along with his partner’s that night and others on the force. “My life was fine one moment, I went to work and then whamo!”

I assume GoFundMe has already ruled on his guilt or innocence and won’t allow any donations to help him? Why do I even ask.

While I doubt I woulda shot the taser pointer, what’s happening to this guy is a plain old lynching. No hyperbole meant there. It’s a lynching.

Police don't need a grand jury indictment to arrest for a crime. He'll be indicted some time in the future.

You assume correctly.

I will never use GFM. Even for a legitimate cause.

I will donate direct to the specific party if I felt inclined.

But never GoFundMe.

That, of course, would be racist.

The St. Louis prosecutor who hounded Governor Grietens out of office with two charges that later were revealed to be bogus is now being investigated for official misconduct. She claims that it’s racism.

Most, but not all, states have done away the the requirement that grand juries issue charges. It is part of the 5th Amendment that has never been ‘incorporated’. I do not know if GA requires them.

Oh wow. Thanks I didn’t know that. I was silly enough to think that amendments actually mattered :-)
